New BBC1 Programme about Landlords

My name is Grace and I am a TV Researcher working on a new BBC One programme about landlords.

The aim of the programme is a journey which will allows landlords to improve their knowledge of today’s rental market – and their own properties – by experiencing them first-hand as a tenant. It is also an opportunity for the landlords to explore and reflect on how the rental market is changing in Britain and what challenges come with that – for both landlords and tenants. We are fast becoming a nation of renters and this is an interesting (and hopefully fun!) way of exploring the rental market. How is the market changing? How are tenants’ demands changing? Do expectations and demands rise with prices?

We are looking for successful landlords with different stories and reasons to want to get to know their tenants and properties better, by spending a week as one of their tenants. It’s important that the landlords go on a personal journey and are genuinely interested in finding out what it’s like to be a tenant in today’s market and we are looking out for interesting stories to justify a landlord moving into their rental property for a week. So that might be, for example, wanting to explore how their own lives and expectations have changed from when they were a renter, it might be that their business has grown to such a degree that they feel removed from their tenants and properties and would like the opportunity to go ‘back to the floor’.

We are not looking for extremes, we do not want to include the stories of bad landlords or indeed bad tenants, we want to showcase reality and bridge the gap between landlords and tenants by reflecting the actual renting market as it is.

Could you pass on the info to landlords you are in touch with that might be interested?

Kind regards,

Grace

Politics of envy has always been a problem in this country where success is envied and despised as opposed to being celebrated. Such a shame as ultimately business success does actually pay for everything - including the bloated welfare state. Now polticians of all persuasions seem to be feeding this rather than championing hard work, entrepreneurial talent etc. We've got a lovely house, cars, a few quid in the bank and take some great holidays too. I'm not going to apologise for any of that. We started from nothing, work hard, do the right thing and provide housing for many who desperately need it. Now the faux tories seem to persecute us and regard as some sort of cash machine for ne'er do wells - then they wonder why they didn't get the landslide they arrogantly assumed they would.

I think that is exactly what they think Alison. I think the widely held belief that we were all born with a silver spoon and live the life of Riley at the expense of those 'less fortunate' is so deeply entrenched that it is difficult to imagine how it could be moved - certainly this program will only serve to reinforce it.
As we commented earlier, the program makers were never going to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

When I was between tenants last year I seriously suggested moving into the property to my partner as it's in much better condition than the place we live in. However, the legalities and other logistics made this impractical, if not impossible but I still regret it in many ways. It would also sometimes be nice to simply ring someone when something needs doing and leaving it in their hands as I could in the property I rented as a tenant.

Must say the publicity for this programme gives credence to all the worse nightmares expressed by landlords on this site. Just if any of you don't know, it starts (first of a series of six) next week, Wednesday 28th June at 9pm. BBC1. Best to get your high blood pressure pills to hand! I'll definitely need them.

Actually, that's a good point. I assume that the BBC and the landlords they have managed to find know that, if the property is mortgaged, they will probably be breaking the mortgage conditions if the landlord lives in it.

Why would any decent landlord appear on this programme?
Why would a landlord not simply do a property inspection?
Why would they put time and effort in to appear on national telly to 'expose' yourself?
We'll find out in half an hour.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't be certain that the landlords featured in the show actually are the real landlords. Who is to say they are not just hired by the BBC to make this programme in order to have the maximum effect?
I don't suppose at any time will the programme mention how bad some tenants are, or that in fact not all landlords are driving a nice white Mercedes as parked on the driveway of the house in the trailer.

They are definitely real. You will find them bragging on Facebook about their new found celebrity status and ignoring all warnings. There's a few we'll known names too, including Paul Preston and Paul Routledge.

I have expressed my concerns to them personally and also the negative impact their involvement could have on the industry but they don't seem the slightest bit bothered.
