New BBC1 Programme about Landlords

My name is Grace and I am a TV Researcher working on a new BBC One programme about landlords.

The aim of the programme is a journey which will allows landlords to improve their knowledge of today’s rental market – and their own properties – by experiencing them first-hand as a tenant. It is also an opportunity for the landlords to explore and reflect on how the rental market is changing in Britain and what challenges come with that – for both landlords and tenants. We are fast becoming a nation of renters and this is an interesting (and hopefully fun!) way of exploring the rental market. How is the market changing? How are tenants’ demands changing? Do expectations and demands rise with prices?

We are looking for successful landlords with different stories and reasons to want to get to know their tenants and properties better, by spending a week as one of their tenants. It’s important that the landlords go on a personal journey and are genuinely interested in finding out what it’s like to be a tenant in today’s market and we are looking out for interesting stories to justify a landlord moving into their rental property for a week. So that might be, for example, wanting to explore how their own lives and expectations have changed from when they were a renter, it might be that their business has grown to such a degree that they feel removed from their tenants and properties and would like the opportunity to go ‘back to the floor’.

We are not looking for extremes, we do not want to include the stories of bad landlords or indeed bad tenants, we want to showcase reality and bridge the gap between landlords and tenants by reflecting the actual renting market as it is.

Could you pass on the info to landlords you are in touch with that might be interested?

Kind regards,

Grace

Yes, I've been having a go at one of them over on FB. His name is: Paul T Lajszczak. He's loving it - he thinks he's hit the big time with his new-found fame.

I take it all back. That was a great feel good TV programme. Well done to the landlords who featured on this one.

It was a bit cringeworthy at the beginning but it got much better.

Will they all be the same though?

Let's see what next week brings.

Does any regular poster on here relate to that programme?

Just watched whole program. Wasn't as bad as I previously feared. That said, if they had shown 'normal' landlords (i.e. where any issues are reported and then dealt with instantly on an ongoing basis) it would have made very boring viewing!

It wasn't as bad as I expected. At least the landlords came across as decent human beings and the message was clear that landlords want tenants to report issues so they can be fixed quickly and the longer they are left the costlier they are to fix.

Yes!

I had a constant complainer and thought I'd got a bad tenant. My brother eventually visited him late one evening and there were loads of problems. I asked the tenants if they could live with relatives for a month, knocked down a mouldy lean to, replaced the kitchen, the carpets, the heating system and gave the garden a makeover. Obviously I didn't charge rent for the month the tenants were out and I also promised to give them a month rent free at Xmas this year subject to keeping to the terms of their tenancy, which includes reporting issues as they arise and allowing maintenance people to do the work at reasonable times, not after the problems have caused further damage.

Tenants are delighted and all is good.

My fear was that the landlords they would feature on TV would be nothing like me. I was wrong and have apologised to Paul Preston on Facebook for my cynicism and critique.

I don't know the other landlords on the show but I have massive respect for them. They made a very tough decision, which wasn't a commercial one. I hope it works out for them and for their tenant. Only time will tell whether they made the right choice. Given that they were on TV it would have been much harder for them to make a hard nosed business decision. Their generosity has cost them £250 a month in lost revenue, and possibly more. Not all landlords can afford to be so generous, especially those who are one property landlords through circumstance as opposed to choice.

The unspoken message to tenants on this programme must be to seek to rent from a successful portfolio landlord and not an accidental landlord who hasn't got the financial resources necessary to be in this business. I suspect we will see some of those in future episodes.
