Keir Starmer promises clampdown on BTL landlords

The leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, says his government will clamp down on buy to let landlords if his party takes power.

In his speech to the party conference in Liverpool, Sir Keir said he would promote home ownership – and stop buy to let landlords and second homeowners ‘getting in first’.

A Labour government would also offer ‘real’ first-time buyers a mortgage guarantee scheme.

Promises to clampdown on BTL landlords

The relevant part of Sir Keir’s one-hour speech that promises to clampdown on BTL landlords is below:

“I’ve seen home ownership rise almost my entire life – it’s the bedrock of security and aspiration. That pebble-dashed semi meant everything to my family. But now, under the Tories, the dream of owning your own home is slipping away for too many.

“And that’s a political choice. Because if you keep inflating demand without increasing supply house prices will only rise. And homes become less affordable for working people.

“So, we will set a new target – 70% home ownership and we will meet it with a new set of political choices. A Labour set of political choices.

“No more buy-to-let landlords or second homeowners getting in first. We will back working people’s aspiration. Help real first-time buyers onto the ladder with a new mortgage guarantee scheme. Reform planning so speculators can’t stop communities getting shovels in the ground.”

Legislation to prevent landlords from buying properties?

While there’s not a lot of detail in Sir Keir’s speech, there’s no indication on how legislation can be drafted and then passed to prevent landlords from buying properties – or would Labour opt for a fiscal solution that would make it impossible for landlords to buy homes to rent out?

He really is full of hot air isn’t he?

The solution has always been to increase supply, so why are Politicians so oblivious to this fact?

And he had better hope he’s in power quickly because there won’t be many landlords left if he hangs around for too long!

For Gods sake build more council houses!
Where I live a vast amount of County Council owned land or with first options are sold to developers, why not build council houses on most of it. Where are all the new council estates being built as they did back in the day?

He is full nonsense, well if they want everyone to own house they should build enough affordable houses which they fails to do so , now PRS is dying with interest rate is getting high and and section 24 and introducing rent freeze and eviction ban and EPC band changing to min C , which leaves PRS on it last leg and it won’t be for long time till you see most of landlords be out of this sector . Leaving no choice for gov to build new houses to meet the high demand . gov should work with landlords not against them .

More unbelievable nonsense. You couldn't make it up, mind you he just has!!!! BUILD MORE COUNCIL HOUSES, don't just talk about, DO IT. Most councils have loads of money invested in stupid places, invest it in bricks and mortar.

He wants PRS property for people to buy at knock down prices.
Rental properties will become so scarce that there could be a rise of unaccountable Rackman style landlords as Councils-will be too snowed under trying to house all those that have been evicted.

There will be no danger of buy to let landlords getting in first as there won't be any BTL landlords left the way things are going. So, unless there are affordable homes, there will be empty properties taking ages to sell and nobody to buy them.

The man is an idiot.
The government go on about the homeless when in fact it will be them that make people homeless.
There is no social housing stock in most areas across the uk so when landlords sell up or dont invents or get new BTL because of their ignorance to the housing market what will they come up with then.
The demand is high for private rental, not many families can obtain a mortgage, and some prefer private rental as they do not have the overheads of repairs.
The government on all sides are living in a bubble.
