Why do we value Asylum Seekers more than British homeless?

Why do we value Asylum Seekers more than British homeless?

Hello, This is another of those strange anomalies/priorities which make little sense. We pick up thousands of asylum seekers in boats crossing the channel and some have no right to be here.

We’ve all seen reports of the overcrowded centres where they start, but what about the luxury hotels that they are sometimes housed in?

Then Serco, instructed by the Govt, are offering landlords more in rent for their properties than the rent they are currently getting. Why? What about our homeless?

Many of them are British citizens, people down on their luck who have had mortgages, paid council tax and contributed for years to British tax and society. Are they not more deserving of our generosity?

Some of them are ex-service personnel who, in addition, have fought for our country. Where is the rhyme or reason in all of this?

Our country is upside down, vilifying landlords, protecting new arrivals – crazy.

Grahame

I don't blame asylum seekers for our troubles, that clearly lies with our ridiculous successive governments who have no interest in the likes of genuine hard working people. This government system in general needs a massive change, cos it certainly aint working as it is.

" take them straight back to France, that's where they should be claiming asylum legally if I am correct."
You are not correct. The UK is signed up to international law and the Refugee Convention. Anyone can apply for asylum in any country, and contrary to the misinformation peddled by MSM, there is absolutely no obligation for anyone to stay in the first, or any safe country they pass through. The Dublin Agreement did enable the UK to pass asylum seekers back to mainland Europe, but we lost that facility when we left the EU

You're welcome to take my share of the tax burden.

We're full. We simply cannot house the entire world's problem-cases.

Unfortunately, no politician will be able to come to the same conclusion without being branded as a racist. They dare not open their mouths and suggest that we really don't want the illegal immigrants who try to jump the queue by crossing the Channel. Very soon the number of crossings will fall, but that's not because of the recent agreement with France - it will be because it is Winter. Come the Spring you can bet your life the numbers crossing will rise once again, and mainly with young men from Albanian.

What do you mean?

The poster I replied to, complained about Asylum Seekers smoking and using mobile phones, as if that is an indicator that they have the means to get themselves out their circumstances.

Can you understand how ridiculous that is?

To quote your sarcastic original comment:

"If they think they can come here AFTER THEIR TOWNS HAVE BEEN BOMBED...and they think they can come here with some sort of vice or coping mechanism they've got another thing coming!"

It's not at all ridiculous. It does not sit well with the British. Whatever sympathy we might have had is greatly diminished (and rightly so) by them even having mobile phones -a luxury item to many- let alone the very latest. Smoking is not a cheap habit and a waste of money...don't you dare come begging when you have money to throw away and are in a better position than many of our own veterans. And learn some bloody humility. Nobody is buying the 'fleeing war' act anymore. They should be jolly grateful to be cold, hungry and homeless, albeit no longer in the country they are allegedly fleeing.

They literally can't do that. There are no options for claiming asylum legally outside the UK. So they try to make it to the UK to have a chance of doing this. We could change this by opening up legal channels eg in France - but the govt has rejected this option.

Mobile phones aren't a luxury item these days - everyone has one and they cost as little as £10. Most people have them from before they left their home country and keep them because it's the only way to keep in touch with family - often they rely on the mobile network to get internet access rather than use computers, which are more expensive and need more power. They are not leaving their country and then buying expensive phones for fun. They are also the only way to get in touch with govt services, or organisations such as Migrant Help.

Albania has a massive problem with people trafficking - for forced prostitution (women) and forced labour (usually men). The people who come here are most often either being trafficked or trying to escape. I once had an unforgettable conversation with an Albanian asylum seeker with two children under 5 who had been trafficked for prostitution and escaped. She can't go back due to the risk. The answer is for sure a better government and rule of law in Albania.
