Shelter ask for Landlords views
Two Property118 members have pointed out that Shelter are actually asking for views from Landlords and have produced a survey to complete: Click Here.
The request from Shelter states: “Take our survey to help us understand what’s important to you and how we can best work together towards developing a better private rental sector. Answers are completely anonymised.”
Questions include:
- What were your motivations for becoming a landlord?
- What are the best things about being a landlord?
- What are the main challenges you face as a landlord?
- How would you describe your relationship with your tenants?
- How do you think Shelter can work better with landlords?
- What has been your experience of Shelter?
We all hope this can be used as a positive step for Shelter and the PRS to start working together as opposed to against each other to the benefit of tenants.

This is what respected property expert, Kate Faulkner has to say about Shelter’s survey:
‘Shelter is asking for landlords’ views!
You would be forgiven for being very suspicious of this request from Shelter ‘To help us understand what’s important to you and how we can best work together towards developing a better private rental sector’.
However, in the spirit of transparency, now apparently is the time to tell them what you think, I will warn you however, that some of these questions are suspiciously anti-agent.
If you would like to fill in the survey, you can find it here: Shelter survey.’
She has previously pointed to Shelter ‘scaremongering’ through omission of key facts in their ‘reports:’

NB. This just crossed with Chris’ post. Great minds think alike…

Simple Solution To Reduce Or Eliminate Homelessness (Something Useful for Shelter to fight for)
• Scrap section 24
• Scrap Licensing (Environmental health is in place to carry out all useful licensing duties)
• Scrap Stamp Duty on 2nd Properties
• Let rents rise to whatever rent is achievable
• Let property prices rise to whatever is achievable
Result
• More Landlords
• More properties being built
• More properties to rent out
• Rents reach a level where they rise very slowly or may even possibly fall
• Property prices level out
• Property standards improve to attract tenants
• Everyone is happy

I think there are three different threads for Selective Licensing…

Mick – will you please give them your details on the survey so they can contact you? You have some much experience of this that they need to hear first-hand.

I have done, many a times.
And also emailed the big bosses of Shelter a many of times. No reply.
I’ve said I’m here, please come talk to me. I’ve been one of the few that has took HB tenants in Nottingham last 22 years & if I can’t do it any more, nor my few remaining Landlord mates, where they gonna’ live?
As yes I’m still waiting for ’em to reply to me.
I’m not slating Shelter either. So if they can’t even talk to me to discuss & not argue, who which Landlord are they talking to?

Not quite that simple.
There are other issues such as benefit levels sufficient to cover rent, and problems with UC (to name two).
