Shelter and HSBC have teamed up for a video campaign to show the realities of the housing crisis, as the housing charity claims people are living in fear over Section 21.

The housing charity and bank claim the video titled ‘Our House’ shows the realities for families living in “grotty-unsafe temporary accommodation where vital repairs go undone for months.”

The bank claims they will match all monetary donations received through Shelter’s Our House campaign up to a total of £100,000.

Shelter has blamed the temporary accommodation crisis on a combination of factors, including soaring rents, and says people are living in fear “over an eviction notice dropping through their letterbox at home.”

Calling on the public to stand with us

The video, set to the lyrics of Madness’ Our House, shows a family living in cramped temporary accommodation, with the father cleaning mould from the walls.

At the end, viewers are urged to “donate now,” while the YouTube description says: “HSBC UK will match all monetary donations received through Shelter’s Our House campaign up to a total of £100,000.”

Shelter and HSBC claim the partnership will make “a real difference” and are calling on the public to donate.

Shelter’s emergency helpline manager, Nadeem Khan said: “Together with HSBC UK, we’re working with families up and down the country to help build financial resilience and stop homelessness before it happens.

“Our House shines a light on the harsh reality that thousands face, and we’re calling on the public to stand with us in the fight to end homelessness for good.”

HSBC UK’s Head of Societal Purpose & Sustainability, Natalie Gregoire-Skeete, said: “With over 124,000 families in England at risk of homelessness, the ‘Our House’ campaign paints the stark reality faced by far too many families in the UK.

“By combining housing expertise, community insight, and practical financial support, our partnership with Shelter is helping people and families build financial resilience – support that can make a real difference when the unexpected happens.”

People living with constant fear they could lose their home the moment an eviction notice drops

Shelter’s emergency helpline manager, Nadeem Khan blames Section 21 and soaring rents for the temporary accommodation crisis.

He said: “It’s utterly disgraceful that across the country, more and more families are being pushed to the brink of homelessness. Soaring rents, low incomes, and a chronic shortage of social homes mean that even parents who work tirelessly to put food on the table are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

“Every day, we hear from people living with the constant fear that they could lose their home the moment an eviction notice drops through their letterbox. Many are skipping meals just to cover rent, cutting back on essentials, and making impossible choices simply to stay afloat.”

According to research by Shelter, there has been a 10% increase in the number of families assessed by their local council as homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness compared to five years ago.

Analysis by Shelter also reveals 124,210 families in England faced homelessness in 2024/25, the equivalent of one in every 57 families.

Single-parent families are almost four times more likely to be homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness, with one in every 24 single-parent households affected.

The risk varies regionally, with London (24% increase) and the North East (31% increase) seeing particularly sharp rises.

If I was renting grotty unsafe accommodation then I would move

Oh but there’s hardly anywhere to move to because landlords are selling up and rents are increasing

I did a Rightmove search for 3 bed properties with a half-mile radius of my rental (which is 1 mile diameter). 12 for sale, 2 for let

Will they still be bleating about evictions when S21 is gone because they will still happen.

Cramped accommodation of any type has a higher potential for condensation and mould if its not cleaned.

Where’s the NRLA funded counter advert to explain the real stats and how the PRS is propping up the housing sector?

It’s sad to see any one having to live in such conditions but exactly whose fault is it that there is a ‘temporary accommodation crisis ‘ which has been going on for far too long?

How about Shelter building some houses or spending some of their stash to buy up property to provide homes

The more they bash the PRS, the less houses there will be

What will shelter do with the money they raise, because they don’t spend it helping people find housing?

They are making the most of the time until the RRB becomes law to make money off the backs of the homeless. After that, they’ve done their job with s21 and killed their golden goose.

Higher taxes on landlords + more regulations on landlords + the threat through the RRB of further restrictions on landlords’ ability to control their businesses + the threat that sub-C EPC rated properties won’t be rentable = fewer private landlords = more homelessness.
You’d think even Shelter could work this out.

This article, the photo and the video get up my nose. It plays to the myth that ALL landlords rip people off and house them in appalling conditions. I notice that cash rich Shelter and super cash rich HSBC are not actually putting in any of their own money (except for the video which is probably tax deductible) supporting people struggling with rent. The HSBC and Shelter websites list options for people who can’t afford their rent but none involve them actually dipping their hands into their own pockets to help out. Section 21 is just a bit of legislation that will soon disappear, it provides a means of securing evictions, it is not the cause of evictions these causes will remain same as ever i.e. rent arrears, property damage, anti-social behaviour and landlords wanting to sell up.

They are all passing unfortunate (poorer predominantly) tenants from pillar to post – Cenral Govt, Local Govt/Councils, banks, homeless charities etc making out they are helping but not (infact making things far worse sadly) – the last two cash rich but wont actually help house this demographic. And worse still they are hounding out the good (who are in the majority) landlords who actually provided decent and affordable housing.

The house in the video looks like either a council flat or council temporary accommodation.
None of my houses look like this and no self-respecting landlord would rent a house that looks like the one in the video.

I feel sorry for families that end up living in such a space. This is the fruit of your labour, Shelter – years of bad-mouthing landlords is finally bearing fruit. Except it’s not the fruit you expected to harvest.
Personally I am preparing a letter that I will share with all my tenants as to why their rents are going up together with a letter that I will ask them to send to their MP.

The video shows the windows shut and washing being dried inside highlighting that mould is nearly always due to tenant lifestyle.

If they are making such obvious errors in a staged video, what are they advising tenants?

Ironically HSBC is one of the shares I now own after liquidating 95% of my portfolio exactly because of the ignorance of successive governments taking Shelter’s view of the PRS as Gospel – and then gold plating it some in their legislation.
