An independent councillor who referred to private landlords as ‘entitled parasites’ on social media has had complaints against him thrown out by an ethics watchdog, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

Coun Ross McKenzie made the comments during a discussion about new short-term let regulations – angering three landlords who filed complaints to the ethical standards commissioner about his conduct.

The complaints were made on the grounds that the comments were bullying, disrespectful and amounted to discrimination against landlords.

16 flats were owned by private landlords

The councillor made the comment after discovering from the landlord register that almost all 16 flats in one tenement building were owned by private landlords.

He had said there should be zero short-term lets but deleted the post later saying it had been ‘flippant’.

But then he hit back at claims by a private landlord that councillors ‘never worked tirelessly to make ends meet’.

Coun McKenzie replied: “I have worked tirelessly in health and social care for the past 20 years while handing over a huge proportion of my income to landlords who contribute nothing. Thousands of people in Edinburgh are in the same boat and need representation far more than these entitled parasites.”

Make ‘offensive’ comments about landlords

One landlord replied demanding a retraction claiming it was unacceptable for an elected representative to make ‘offensive’ comments about landlords, who would be among those living in his ward.

However, the complaints were rejected by the watchdog which concluded that the criticism was of ‘landlords in general’ and was not directed at any individual landlord.

Coun McKenzie repeated the statement saying landlords are ‘parasites’ on December 11 in a tweet confirming the decision to throw out the complaints.

Not directed at any individual landlord

The standards commissioner ruled that there was no evidence to suggest that the councillor’s comments were directed at any individual landlord but of ‘landlords in general’,

he commissioner also noted that the councillor’s comments were made in the context of a discussion about new short-term let regulations.

The commissioner found that the councillor’s comments were not discriminatory – but could be seen as disrespectful and ‘impolite’ – and that they did not breach the councillors’ code of conduct.

Speaking to the newspaper, Coun McKenzie said the claims had been ‘spurious’ and that the term ‘landlord’ was a ‘protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010’.

He added: “Landlordism is inherently parasitic – landlords receive rent simply because they happen to own a piece of land and the rent they receive comes from the labour of their tenants. This statement is not controversial.”

Councillor McKenzie complains about “ handing over a huge proportion of my income to landlords who contribute nothing." Nothing that is apart from a roof over his head.
If private landlords contribute nothing then, logically, Councils and registered social landlords also contribute nothing. All persons who rent out properties for others to live in are in Ross McKenzie's Tiny Universe "parasites".
Perhaps Mr McKenzie would have preferred 20 years living with his parents or sleeping on friends' couches? He should try North Korea where there are absolutely no parasitic private landlords.

Would this 'friends' couch actually probabilistic ally be another landlords couch?
. Its all so selective the politics of envy about contributing nothing. I mean you could go down that rabbit hole on one hand they hate landlords because they are rich yet they chances are then look up to the celebs or are also rich but they do not have the media against them so the hate complex does not apply.
As for for contributing nothing except the obvious they also provide income for plumbers/painters. But lets just assume they contribute nothing at all if landlords don't surely actors/models or even footballers etc etc

Communist. There is nothing inherently parasitic around a landlord relationship.
This councillor feeding off the hard earned taxes of society is the true parasite. And oh….his pension that delivers dividend or interest income earned off the sweat of hard working labourers or borrowers? Who’s the true parasite?
Most good landlords and tenants working together would be considered symbiotic. These kinds of people create antagonism in society to exploit their own narrow political agenda to everyone’s disservice. They sow the seeds of hatred and envy which creates a toxic society built on resentment and bitterness. We should abhor those who sow hatred in our society.

Leaving aside the Parasite comments on Landlords. I wonder what his views are on the subsidies the treasury send up there day in and day out.
How do you "happen to own a piece of land"
Sounds bit like communism to me.
Wasnt it Oscar Wilde who said if someone wants to be a politician that should probably preclude them!

If I was his landlord I'd give him notice and sell.

That should please him.

I own property because I worked hard to buy it and avoided spending money on cars and holidays.
I did so because I wanted to provide security for my children. I was always taught that you should spend your money on land because they don’t make more of it and it will always be needed.
Perhaps if this Labourite had been taught the same, he wouldn’t be the jealous fwit that he is today,
I guess my earlier post was removed so I won’t repeat it. My point remains valid.

All the utility companies happen to have energy, water etc, and also collect payments from the labour of their customers.
So, Mr Mckenzie, your point is?

Talk about pot calling the kettle black. Councillors sole contribution to society, is to spend (often times waste) OTHER PEOPLES MONEY. Isn't that pretty much the very definition of parasite?

I don't agree with the ethics watchdog, they concluded that the criticism was of ‘landlords in general’ and was not directed at any individual landlord.

So if I said "Muslims are smelly", "women are terrorists" or "bankers are parasites" in a public forum as an elected representative (absolutely not my opinion, I'm just making a point) my comments wouldn't be classed as bullying, disrespectful and amounted to discrimination against Muslims, women or bankers, because I wasn't talking about a particular person.

No, I didn't think so....

I think that quote about land is a quote from Mark Twain.

I also managed to retain the property I have not just through working very hard, for a long time, but also through taking risk and investing. A large number of council employees and other public sector workers also invest in property to supplement their incomes and supplement their pensions (that are already generous compared to the private sector). I think we have to remember that this appears to be a Councillor from Scotland where the SNP holds sway.

Compared to other parts of the UK nobody needs to make more land in Scotland because there's loads of it available. But in order to do something with that land and put a roof over somebody's head somebody else still needs to invest in that. At the moment, with the likes of the SNP and this councillor attacking landlords, why ever would you invest in residential property in Scotland?

The tax payer already invests more per capita in Scotland than it does in England or Wales because of the Barnett Formula.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_formula#:~:text=9%20External%20links-,Calculation,Wales%2C%20Scotland%20and%20Northern%20Ireland.

It seems very short sighted that councillors like this and parties like the SNP can't see that Scotland also needs investment and attacking the investors for short-term sound-bites can only hurt tenants and Scottish citizens. That's not just in the long-term but in the medium term. The SNP rent controls have already come home to roost and have resulted in higher rents for tenants.
