Hello, I have a tenant on remand in prison for the last three weeks. He has no family or friends, despite phone calls and emails with no reply.
I cannot find out which prison he is in.
He is now 10 weeks behind with his rent; the severity of the alleged crime suggests that he will get a sentence.
I am contemplating serving a section 8 notice, but the only place I can serve this is at his home address, but I know he is not there.
Any help or advice would be greatly received.
Thank you,
A

TBH I would just change the locks and re-let. If he’s in jail what can he do…? Even better … sell up.
I have had one tenant be carted off in a police car for fighting with other tenants and stealing their food ( HMO) and did exactly this. Even though he was only held for three days and returned F-ing and Blinding, he couldn’t get in and we stood firm. He then disappeared
Sadly the “legal” route never works.

Unfortunately, much as I warm to your ploy, it will lead to a circa £40,000 fine for illegal eviction. The government has really screwed landlords (and tenants).
