Revenge Eviction or was the landlord right?

Please take a close look at this picture in Shelter’s latest propaganda (below).

Have a look at the walls and the blinds!

Would you live like this?

Clearly this mother has very little self respect and hasn’t touched any cleaning products for years.

Was the property like this when she moved in? If so why did she move in?

Even if that’s all she can afford, and it was in that state on day one, surely she would want to clean it up for the health of her child if nothing else?

These are the pictures that are being shown to our MP’s to influence licensing. If we want to stop the likes of Shelter from getting away with this ludicrous propaganda then landlords need to be asking the right questions so that people take a step back and think before they dig deep into their pockets to pay more.

For the record, if I found one of my tenants was living in these conditions I would evict, and probably report the mother to social services too. Now if that deserves the tag of “revenge eviction” I plead guilty.

im quite sure thats a mock up rather than a real bathroom and they are actors rather than real tenants. shelter always have photogenic 'tenants' in their campaigns which is a bit of a give away. and that bathroom is huge...way too big to be real!

Perhaps Shelter could run a campaign against "revenge trashing" where in revenge for the landlord asking to be paid the agreed rent, the tenant steals and sells the white goods, smashes up the house, ruins the garden and absconds without paying the rent?

Very good points, but if they continue to stoop to such levels they need to be shamed for it and it needs landlords like us to get that ball rolling.

Shelter have a great Facebook page to get this started as they post all of their propaganda there. A few choice comments can make for great fun on a cold and damp Autumn or Winter evening. Light blue touch paper and retreat in haste!

I liked the Shelter Facebook page just so that their adverts appeared on my timeline for this purpose 😉

hi mark,
shelter often post on FB and get quite a lot of negative comments. what about a campaign to complain to the advertising standards authority that this ad is misleading as its portraying a situation that is not real.
and shouldnt the charities commission have something to say?
shelter really do prove the power of propaganda!

I had one lady tenant in a second floor flat who used to throw her baby's dirty nappies out of the window into the garden for everyone else to enjoy. Another with tenants that trod chewing gum into/ and stubbed their cigarettes out on the carpet. Yes there are some bad landlords with bad properties but some tenants turn properties into what Shelter show on their fake poster.

Why do Shelter (and Mr Milliban) wage such a war on Landlords? Can they not see that when they have succeeded to drive us away there will be no one to offer housing to people who rent, no government could afford to fund it on the current scale?

Correction: She was not a lady.

Maybe someone a bit artistic (not me!) could change the caption to " landlords shouldn't fear evicting tenants if they don't clean" Ask your MP to end disrespectful tenants. And post it to shelters Facebook and Twitter accounts!

Yes, as Mark says there is a way out of this lady's dreadful predicament:

-Sand Paper and Paint (it simply looks like paint that's been allowed to peel, not damp or condensation) - that is, assuming the landlord won't decorate
-A Cloth
-A Bottle of Detergent
-A Mop
-A Hoover (borrow or hire if you don't have one)

However, I'm forgetting that the lady might be suffering from a dreadful handicap, as first identified by Mary Latham, called being a lazy cow.

I mean no offence or disrespect to anyone suffering from a REAL disability, such as my mother. Anyone in that situation should ensure they claim the benefits they're entitled to, which if they need it, includes an allowance for help with day to day living such as household chores.

My mother suffers from severe osteo arthritis that often keeps her awake at night, fibromalgia, and is partially paralysed from a stroke, but her home is always spotless and tidy, and there's always enough food in her fridge. She manages most of this without help from anyone, and even when I am there, she's often reluctant to accept my help.

Of course it is staged but you're right that it is merely propaganda.

Landlord's really need to work together on fighting for their rights no matter what forum or groups they are members of.

Mark, does Property 118 currently have any plans?
