Feedback on our new website design please

This time last week we unveiled a fresh Property118 website design and new functionality to improve Navigation, searching and the general user experience.

One of the new features we have added is a ‘hover-over’ function which appears when your mouse cursor is placed over a members name or Avatar. The date of when the member joined Property118 and how many comments they have posted to date is then displayed. We think this will be particularly useful to established members who like to report inappropriate comments. Sadly, some people join forums and post antagonistic comments to wind people up. For some reason they get a kick out of it! Where such comments are reported a view is then taken by moderators on whether to remove the offending comment, and in extreme cases to expel the member and block their IP address so that they are unable to create a membership profile using an different name and email account.

Inevitably there were a few initial ‘bug-fixes’ to deal with when we first launched the new website and we are extremely grateful to members who took the time and effort to point these out to us. Hopefully, these have now all been resolved. We hope you will agree that the text font is now much easier to read for example, and to make bigger for those with less than 20:20 vision. Other fixes were to ensure that comment links pointed directly to the associated comment as opposed to the article and that login issues were resolved. We are still working on some image cropping issues.

There may still be things you spot which are slightly annoying or could be improved upon further, hence we would very much like you to tell us what these are.

Please leave comments below and rest assured that we take all user feedback very seriously and will do whatever we can to continue to improve your user experience.

Daily Newsletters were paused whilst we were ‘bug-fixing’ but will now resume for those who were previously receiving them and for all new members.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For example there is a picture of the middle of someone's body in the article on freehold purchase, looking pretty squarely at their crotch with heads and feet missing.

No change I am afraid - title overwrites headline. I tried to paste the screen here but that didn't work

Hello all

If you look to the right of your screen you will notice that we have added some extra links to the most popular areas of our website for regular users.

These will appear next to comments.

Feedback requested please - is it helpful?

I am a fan property118 and all the real help it provides. However, I have some criticisms of the new look.

1. It does not display correctly on some browsers/devices i.e. text laid on top of text / overlapping panels, so it is illegible.
2. The general layout is confusing and disorganised. There are too many panels with too many articles at once. I cannot tell which things are forums threads and which are news stories.
3. The colour scheme is now very generic black on white like many wordpress blogs. The old blue scheme was a distinctive brand and immediately recognisable and also easier on the eye.

The old site did look a little dated compared to other sites but worked perfectly and was very usable. There is a fad at the moment for smartphone first designs which all new websites have that look with a landing page with big lettering and no information. Sites that do not follow that theme tend to look dated, but it does not matter. The most important thing is that a site is usable and people use it. It must have been a big investment to update the site so I am sorry to be critical and of course you have to move with the times or get left behind. However, I think a less cluttered design (but not landing page style) with the old colour scheme would be better. And make sure it uses a suitable responsive framework to ensure the layout displays on all devices.

The extra links on the right would be much more helpful if they included the date of the last comment so that it was easy to tell at glance if there had been any new input since last visit.

Hi Joel

Thank you for your feedback.

The overlap issues occurred yesterday whilst we were making some changes and were fixed very quickly. It may be that your browser has cached the problem. If you click the ctrl + F5 keys at the same time or refresh your browser this should clear the problem if you are still seeing it.

Our corporate colour scheme has not changed, i.e. Blue and orange with black on light grey in comments and black text on white packground on pages.

The new design has substantially de-cluttered the website and unnoticed navigation has been added with new colour coding.

Property118 is optimised for the 5 browsers that 98% of our users choose to view on. We have a separate themes optimised for mobile device users and tablet users.

Nearly all news items and all readers questions have a commenting section below, hence they can all become discussion forum posts.

I think I was so used to the old version that it may be that I felt a bit lost when everything changed. The old one seemed to have less things going on at once but maybe I will get used to the new one and it will be OK. I had overlap problems on firefox on a netbook and a PC but will see if they are fixed now. Thanks for all the good work and keeping the site going for so long.

Just try ctrl + F key at the same time and it should clear.

I'm looking at Firefox and there are no overlap issues.
