Groucho did indeed say that Mark but tongue in cheek for the laugh it got.

Of course it's difficult which is why a professional approach is needed and constructive criticism should be listened to. Mutual admiration societies achieve nothing other than a short term glow of self-satisfaction.

Well done Larry for having the balls to appear on live radio. With the BBC you're up against highly trained professional personnel who have been interviewing for years, know every trick in the book and are experts at tripping the interviewee up. She appeared to have an axe to grind from the start, by pressing you on membership numbers which was irrelevant to the debate.
The BBC is an ultra lefty liberal organisation which we are forced to pay for (even if we only want to watch non BBC channels) otherwise we can end up with a prison sentence. Even in North Korea they get their state TV and radio for free.
Showing empathy for landlords is simply not part of the BBC’s DNA as evidenced by her immemdiate hostile attitude to you. You might be better off next time appearing on LBC where they are a little more open to a balanced debate and have less of a condescending attitude.

Yes, well done Larry!

You may have seen my hopefully constructive critique of the new NLA on other thread, but yes fully agree the interviewer obv chose the easy route of shutting down Larry as soon as she could!

It was a sad yet realistic indictment of the media’s general behaviour towards what they perceive as the devil’s incarnate (LLs).

For this reason, we need skilled media trained representatives. Genuinely no offence intended to Larry other than to point out (again) we need professional media ppl assisting. Sadly in this day and age of relentless media hyperbole... simply ‘telling the truth’ does not suffice.

The lesson is NOT to seek media coverage if you don't know what you're doing and are unwilling to answer the most basic questions like 'how many members do you have?'

Shelter is not being attacked, however they are being exposed for what is they really do as opposed to what their name and their marketing implies they do.

I support that entirely!

In defence of the BBC I have just seen an interview on the Victoria Derbyshire show on BBC2 in which the landlord who took part is portrayed as the good guy, calm, reasonable and doing his best to look after his tenants whilst at the same time making clear his horror at the fees charged by some letting agents. The interview starts about 20 minutes into the programme if anyone is interested in seeing that the BBC are not congenitally hostile towards landlords.

Reply to the comment left by Seething Landlord at 29/11/2018 - 19:53I don't usually involve myself in what i consider juvenile spats but your comment regarding "Who do you think should provide the advice or would you prefer that tenants are left to fend for themselves against the actions of landlords who try to bend the rules?" needs challenging.
There are numerous organisations in the UK who act as unethical "gatekeepers" to criminal tenants - Shelter is merely one of them. The local Councils, CAB and the solicitors appointed by these organisations to ensure that the PRS houses these tenants at the PRS cost are examples of other advisory authorities.
As a non UK BTL investor, who exposed herself to the PRS in the UK 8 years ago as a means to creating an off shore pension, may I offer some objective insight to the discussion.
I have been amazed at the docile acceptance of the PRS in the UK to the continual onslaught and derision of their industry. The few bodies who purport to act on their behalf have been so toothless that this onslaught has worsened in the last 8 years to a meme that has become a national belief ie landlords are scum. I take huge umbrage at that. I have invested large amounts of money to provide upmarket housing to tenants who have had all the benefit of a subsidised living standard in the hopes that the capital appreciation on my luxury new builds would one day reward me. So far no good 🙂
We may not all appreciate the raw energy Larry brings to the PRS via his LA but experience will condense this energy into a solid wall of cogent and trenchant argument that defends the PRS collectively.
He has arrived like a tempest and is unapologetic about his mission to fight on behalf o private landlords.
I'm prepared to indulge him. In fact I admire his courage and determination. We finally have someone who is prepared to voice dissent, albeit in a rambunctious way, but hey nobody else has had the gall to do so ... right?

To be fair, criticism of communication skills can be helpful sometimes in that with the benefit of time to reflect it can be used positively to hone skills. As the founder of this forum I know this only too well, especially from the battle with West Brom, which some people were extremely critical of .... well until we won that is!

I was also the first to tackle S24 head on, and I believe I was the first to meet the Treasury to explain the true impact within a week of Osborne’s infamous announcement of it. Others have since realised that I was right of course, but distinctly I recall one other forum owner arguing with me at the time that I had misunderstood it, then later saying she was “sitting on the fence” but has since put herself in the limelight of the Ace The TenantTax campaign as a guru on the topic. That same forum owner has also criticised me for publishing solutions!

We must remember that we cannot please all of the people all of the time, but with wisdom we learn to listen to what they have to say, take time to reflect and filter/adjust our thoughts and messages as best we can.
