Landlord sending mail to rented property?

Hi all, My landlord in the UK is allegedly abroad but has told the managing agent that he wants all his mail to continue to come to this rented property even though he doesn’t stay here.  Is this legal or is it right?

He also insists on having one utility bill in his name. This sounds like some sort of tax dodging or other dubious plans at work here

If we were to reimburse the landlord for the utility bill are we liable for participating in any dubious scheme he may be involved in?

Kind Regards

Pri

The OP never mentioned if this is a flat, single residence or a HMO. It's common for many HMO LLs to keep the bill in their name then split it between tenants, or a flat could be on a sub-meter.

Dont know if this has changed since Brexit, but if landlord is a British Citizen but living within EU, they can choose to vote in EITHER country (not both).

There too many people on here accusing the landlord of so many things, past judgment and ready to lock him/her up.
The OP only mentioned post, talk about "rush to judgement!"

he does right to have the utility bill in his name if this is a hmo or a sub meter hes do do this by law. Also in the past ive had tenants registering the bills in my nam unknown to me only to find a big bill when they leave Not all tenants are angels!
But my main point is why dies everyone thing automatically think the landlord is a crook for doing this ?
Why is the landlord always in the wrong ?
If the tenants are bothered about this speak to him simple as that.

I think the landlord should keep an eye on the electoral register, but more importantly, should one go as far as to want the same name as the landlord, keep an eye at the land registry!

Why not ask the agent? you don't say if it was previously his home and he is abroad for work reasons in which case it would be quite reasonable as he will wish to maintain a credit rating here for his return.

What does he expect you to do with his mail?

If the Landlord is paying for the utilities, it would be normal for them to be in his name. It is possible to use multiple addresses to commit fraud, but the Land Registry information may make it hard to cheat on CGT. I suspect that he just wants mail to go there while he is away. If he previously lived there, it could be difficult to stop a lot of mail coming, and redirection to overseas is problematic.

Anyone living in the property can add or remove the names from off the electoral register. What types of checks do the council carry out?

A bit of a reach, however People do go through depol to change there name. The landlord would have a hard time explaining, what's happened. Who gets into trouble for fraud and who keeps the property?

As UK citizens residing in Europe!! are now obliged to close UK bank accounts, retaining a rented property address may be simply a way of maintaining a normal account without intention to dodge CGT or any other tax.
