Hello, North Norfolk district council is charging me one day’s council tax because the tenant moved out at 11am on the 9 /8/23. The new tenant moved in on the 10/8/23.
As the tenant didn’t sleep at the house on the 9/9/23, I’ve got to pay one day’s council tax – this don’t seem right.
I’ve told the council they will get no more info from me in the future – and he said ‘more work for the girls in the office’.
Thoughts?
Paul

If just employ and unfurnished, ie between let’s, up to 6 months.
But you can still claim the same and not pay water rates/bills. But you need to inform the water authority

My local council has policy that ALL LLs have to pay one days worth of CT in between tenancy changes.
They use this as an opportunity for data collection which dovetails into their selective licencing so they can track LL who they can see on their CT register and NOT applied for SL!! So agree it is a process of data mining.

hmm…always bowing down to the lowest common denominator. It’s a pity that ‘council’ software doesn’t rout out all those rogue landlords who continue without licences and keep properties animals would be reluctant to live in. The council and environmental health refuse to address these issues in No-Go areas. Now we know your job, know mine – tenancy support worker. I have seen horrors that would make you weep. Big brother appears to be watching the wrong people…Like I said, it’s all commerce and AI helps it all along nicely…Happy days

I have worked on a lot of council software, some of the stuff it does is really clever, and it does identify rogue landlords and benefit cheats (there are more benefit cheats than rogue landlords by a factor of 100). Unfortunately all councils don’t use the same software which is stupid really as they could save a LOT of money if there was a universal approach. I have spent many years writing ‘big brother’ software as a contractor and thats what partly funded my property portfolio.

There will never be a universal approach, it’s always us and them. What is amazing that 14,000 so called diplomats in the UK are exempt from council tax and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Foreign companies trading in the UK appear to be tax exempt…the dreaded Costa to name just one. But good for you for catching the ‘benefits cheats’. I am just in the process of uncovering mass corruption in a local authority and it runs all the way to the top. These are the real cheats unfortunately. There will be a hearing but they will get away with it again and again….as I said Happy days.

On the plus side it will cost the council’s more to collect it than it raises. Especially if you wait for the reminder

thats what i thought should happen. it is disappointing that there is no cost/benefit calculations made before the billing was sent.
i have just had a similar experience with a change over of tenants. as this was going to be a simple change over it had been planned to leave by midday and arrive on same day after noon. but there was an error on the new AST, by the administration company’s computer, so there was a1 day delay. not the end of the world, but the council billed the landlord not for 1 day but for the whole period from outgoing tenant to 31st march 2024. had they waited 1 day they would have all the info for new incoming tenant. i notified them of the 1 day slippage, so we now wait for an amended invoice. the councils speed to get their cash has cost them additional work and a delay of over a week in receiving their 1 day’s council tax.
