    Hi Mark.
I’m happy to go with your suggestion (- there are just a few typos to sort). We do have to somehow check we are not duplicating anyone else’s petition. Maybe someone can take on that task? I’m easy regarding who starts it – whether it comes from here, from the SAL etc. – I just want it up and running so that we can start circulating it, writing emails with the link, try and persuade the DPS to circulate it, the landlord bodies etc. etc. We need it started and then we need to think of all of the organisations and individuals to send it to.

Hi Stewart. That’s because we haven’t started it yet. But it is imminent! We’re just ironing out the details.

Ros, as yet I don’t believe anyone has created a petition but if we don’t use the words mortgage interest relief then I believe there is a real risk that someone else could create one and dilute our efforts. Perhaps so much so that neither of the petitions reach the critical 100,000 number for it to be debated in Parliament.

Indeed if the second petition doesn’t use those words then another one may be started by another party.

Hi Mark. What do you think about John McKay’s point? I’m easy. We can make the point that it’s misleading terminology within the text we send to people? On the other hand, I don’t necessarily think that people will be tapping in ‘mortgage interest relief’ as the main way to find the petition. I think they’ll find the petition because we’ve sent them an email and the organisations we ask to circulate it will also be directly contacting them…

Hi Stewart and everyone else. I’m assuming this is the site:

    https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/check

Actually, on further consideration, I do mind about it being having ‘mortgage interest relief’ in the title, as the word ‘relief’ is the one I object most to.
In the bath, just had the thought about including in the title: ‘Private Rental Tax’
That could be a persuasive title for tenants.
I wondered what happens once it gets 100,000 signatures and just read that it is then considered for debate in Parliament. We’ve got to get cracking!

    Hi Neil

Thanks for your reply. When posting I never see an ‘unsubscribe from this thread link’ as you suggest.

What I see beneath ‘post comment’ is: ‘comment luv’ then ‘Notify me of followup comments via email’ then ‘Notify Me?’. Each of these 3 has a check box beside it.

I assume I should uncheck all 3 boxes? I have tried that, but does not seem to stop the emails.

On another note I sent my MP another email which included BTL Investor Scotland’s questions. I asked if he could ask GO or the Treasury to provide answers to all of them. BTW his own parliamentary role is at the Treasury.

Hi Ros – I think you make a valid point. The suggestions from you, Mark Alexander and John McKay all have merit. My own preference is Mark’s suggestion – Petition to scrap the rented property tax levy – I think this will have the widest appeal. I understand John is considering a separate petition on change.org aimed just at landlords. I am supportive of this as it will help to publicise the campaign. As landlords we need to stand up and fight and make sure our voices are heard.

For the petition I suggest something like:

“Don’t force up rents by levying a tax on mortgage interest”.

This should get support from tenants (and their relatives) just as much as from landlords.

Hi again Ros. My point isn’t about people trying to find the petition, it’s about ensuring that there aren’t more running parallel to each other. All signatories need to be against one effort so that we have more than an excellent chance of hitting the 100k.
