Angela Rayner dodges landlord questions in LBC interview clash

In a feisty exchange on LBC, the Shadow Housing Secretary Angela Rayner refused to comment on Labour’s plan for landlords.

Ms Rayner found herself in a heated exchange with LBC presenter Andrew Castle, who repeatedly pressed her about the growing number of landlords leaving the market.

The Labour politician vehemently disagreed landlords were leaving and argued: “There were plenty of landlords around.”

Countless amount of landlords

Ms Rayner told Mr Castle: “We’ve got a countless amount of landlords at the moment. There’s plenty of them around.”

Mr Castle interrupted her and argued that landlords are leaving the market which is why rents are going up.

However, Ms Rayner completely swerved the question and instead argued social housing was the solution.

She said: “One of the problems in our housing market at the moment is we don’t have enough social housing and that’s the real problem and we will deliver social housing.”

High demand and low supply

Mr Castle did not back down and told Ms Rayner: “Landlords are leaving the market. They are the ones that provide millions of homes for people across the country. The conditions are too difficult for landlords, there’s no money in it for them.

“They feel like they are being pressured from every side. Then when it comes to renew their buy-to-let mortgage, it’s now through the roof. They have to pass on those costs to their tenants.

“High demand and low supply, rents go up, just wondered if you’ve got a plan as Shadow Housing Secretary for landlords?”

Rent costs are very high

Again, Ms Rayner completely dodged the question and instead focused on social housing.

She said: “The rent costs at the moment they’re very high. I’m going to build the houses we need, that’s the point I’m making.”

The full exchange can be seen here.

Politics is show business for ugly people. They are just frontmen, they don’t really run the country they are just puppets to divert the public. The Country is in hock to and run by the big corporations and banks (The Markets). Upset them at your peril, look what happened to Liz Truss. The same will happen to any politician that does not toe the line. Starmer knows that he will have to retain the status quo which is why he appears so short on new policy. As the late comedian Bill Hicks said “I agree with the puppet on the left. The puppet to the right is more to my liking. Ohh wait, one guy is holding both puppets!!”

….and if this pie in the sky promise happens who gets the social housing – it is immigrants (sorry but that’s true they have great housing need coming in with nothing as a family and nothing, I’m not judging it is our system), people who know the system, councillors and their children, MPs for second homes and after 3 years they are free to sell this ‘social housing’ so we are essentially building again for speculators and airbnb – I’m in the middle of it where I live so have an idea of what goes on with this in a large city.

We need family homes, central areas are becoming residential deserts due to no family housing available, this has been sold, small units for single people and not contributing to the area in terms of using our schools. It is more than building houses.

Many on this thread had similar upbringings.

She’s the unions’ mouthpiece, and has reached her position by shouting loudest and longest over anyone who tried to oppose her. It’s why she’s still where she is, rather than having been ousted along with all the other lefty activists, as Starmer had wanted and tried to do.

I live in hope that when we do get a Labour government, she’s kept firmly in her box and away from major decision-making.

Problem is, she doesn’t know, like all on the poor me left she just knows ‘greedy landlords’ has absolutely no insight into the private rental market – do we want someone who doesn’t do her homework?

Every break up means where a unit was once 1, you now need 2 homes. For all those who are terrified of a Labour victory… just remember who sold off the social housing in the first place.

Depends what you mean by not in the Reform party. He sort of is now, he is just trying not to steal the limelight from Tice.

Farage has had more positions than the Karma Sutra, and doubt it’ll change again.

She’s right about one thing – we do need a lot more social housing built. But that is a long term plan which will take years to happen. She needs to have a plan for the shorter term, but of course you will never hear an opposition politician say that on a radio show.
And before you cast her as the devil, just remember that this current “tory” govt is the one removing section 21, cutting CGT allowances and taxing income, not profit. Remember that.
