Say NO To Shelter

In my opinion, the Shelter Housing Charity masquerade as a charity (their official classification) but are really an extreme left wing, anti-landlord lobbying group.

To my knowledge, they don’t provide any “shelter” for the homeless. Instead they seem to focus on making the lives of private housing providers (landlords) a misery.

Shelter run campaigns throught the year but expecially at Christmas which tug at the heart strings. They focus on homeless children and young homeless girls who often end up is difficult predicaments with sexual predators. They raise millions but to my knowledge none of it is actually spent on housing such people in property owned by Shelter .

Shelter support the restrictions on finance cost relief for individual landlords and completely ignore the overwhelming evidence that this will cause rental inflation and an increase in homelessness, especially of the most needy in society who are benefits dependent. It could be cynically argued that without a growing homelessness problem Shelter would struggle to expand!

WShelter admit to having campaigned heavily for landlord registration in Scotland and welcomed its introduction, However, with the passing of time they admit that the exercise was futile due to it costing more to collect the registration fees and administration of the scheme than the amount collected. They will even admit the resultant action to deter criminals operating in the sector has been completely insignificant.  Nevertheless, they refuse to campaign for it to be withdrawn.e have absolute evidence of Shelter buying stock images of grotty properties and passing these off as appalling conditions in the private rented sector.  Evidence and Analysis HERE

RANT OVER ….. for now!

You know my thoughts, Mark. They are here:

https://www.property118.com/campbell-robb-supporting-tenant-tax/85102/

The NLA have stated in their Budget submission that:

'Diverse groups such as Shelter, Generation Rent and Crisis are all coming to the
inescapable conclusion that unless changes are made, tenants will most likely feel
the brunt of these changes in the form of rent increases or eviction so the landlord
can sell the property. Each of these groups have gone on record with government
working groups to say that tenants have increasingly raised this issue with them
since May 2015.'

I'd like to see the evidence for this 'turn-about.' Only last week, Jon Sparkes at Crisis refused to oppose Section 24 and wanted to adopt a 'wait and see' approach. As far as I know, there has been no Shelter turn-about either. Crisis is allegedly now working with the RLA but how can this work in any way when Crisis is still effectively supporting the worst attack on private landlords and the PRS as a whole, by extension, in the history of rented housing in the UK? Both groups are burying their heads in the sand.

I have told Jon Sparkes that we landlords will not 'help' them to house the homeless - Section 24 means that any landlords with finance interest will not be in a position to take these risks. Also, why should we help Crisis with their aim when they do nothing for us?

Cambell Robb should be at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by now. Watch how they soon start slagging off landlords and scapegoating us for everything; something which they haven't done to date. I think there is no-one at the Shelter helm. The Policy guy - forget what his title was - who was on Newsnight wasn't very inspiring (but that could be good). So Robb could get away scot-free (pardon the pun) and not be later blamed for his terrible approach to s24 and his many years of setting the tone for the Government's attack with his constant slagging off of landlords.

Ironic that two large BTL lenders, Birmingham Midshires and TMW (Nationwide) are corporate sponsors of Shelter. I have asked my mortgage broker to pass on my displeasure.
British Gas are another sponsor that I won't be using for any of my properties.

We ( Landlords ) need to get a lot more publicity out there of the names of corporate sponsors to the likes of Shelter, and Crisis ( I didn't know the RLA had 'defected' over to the other side and got into bed with Crisis ?
Perhaps a well written article for Landlord magazines ?
I'd like Ros and Pam to write it 😉
