Allow Landlords to evict tenants where there are 14 days rent arrears

You can’t go into a supermarket and steal your weeks’ groceries. There are laws in place to protect shopkeepers large and small. Not paying rent is also theft with the Landlord being the victim. In Australia, tenants can be evicted for being 14 days in arrears with the rent. Let’s have that system here.

The current system is unfair to Landlords. If a Tenant doesn’t pay rent then it can take a year for a Landlord to regain procession. In that time the Landlord still has to pay the mortgage and other costs. This can ruin many small scale Landlords. Furthermore, it incentivises Landlords to only rent their properties to tenants with higher than average income who are likely to care about getting a bad credit rating.

Let’s have an Australian style system which aims to be neutral between Landlord and Tenant.

I saw this petition on FB a few days ago. Frankly I think we are not doing ourselves any favour. I fully understand the good intention behind that. But I also understand the reservation a lot of landlords have. 14 days notice is just asking Shelter, GR and other pro-tenants bodies to ridicule LLs even more and surely the "LLs-friendly Boris & Co's" retaliation will follow shortly. Yes, petition is needed, but I would say more in the direction of completely ridiculous laws which allow tenants not to pay for months or even years, especially now. I would understand that petition more if for example we had an Australian immigration system, the would be a precedence. I will think about signing. Maybe if the petition said "allow LL to hand in a notice after 1 month arrears" it would have had a bigger uptake... I realise not everyone here would agree and I also realise that not paying rent is nothing short of criminal activity, but I would be very careful with 14 days... I think even if there is 10K signatures, it will be quashed by the Parliament.

Brilliant - Come on everybody lets get this moving!!!
I am not sure that we will get the 14 days however even if the gets us back to the negotiating table for something workable then that's still a big win as the current 6 months is utterly ridiculous

I have signed as doing something is better than doing nothing, but I am inclined to agree with Whiteskifreak above.
The petition narrative is not going to endear LLs to most of the public, especially in the CV19 world with so many job losses. 14 days is too short a period.

Landlords have been hit at an unprecedented level over the past few years and it is accelerating towards our destruction. No doubt many of us have already gone to the wall.
We need to push back hard in order to stand any chance of moving back to the more reasonable situation that we all enjoyed, both landlords and tenants, a few years ago.

But I still signed the petition straight away. The situation in the U.K is ridiculous, the state is overstepping its bounds, and parliament need to know that it is wrong.
The petition asks for 14 days. I would prefer if the government just got out of it, and it was up to the landlord and tenant agreed to the eviction period. The market would then price what this was worth. Shorter periods would have to be offset with lower prices.

A shorter eviction period can be sold as a plus for renters.

Yes we need to petition and fight. But this needs to be about the real 'level playing field' not the one that is totally anti landlord and 100% tenant biased the government keeps alluding to, as well as campaigning for a court system thats fit for purpose. In the 28 years I've been in the game the court system has never been fit for purpose and post covid its now just ridiculous. We're at the full mercy and whims of flaky tenants that see us running scared of them being as we have no rights or power and they are fully aware of this.
Please lets keep this real and serious rather than actially creating ourselves to be a laughing stock.

We are in the midst of a global pandemic. Millions of people have lost work but received no support. Millions more due to lose their livelihoods as furlough ends. Time and place my friends. This petition is unbelievably counter productive and provides super-charged ammunition for the anti landlord body. I wonder if those who have signed would be equally happy for mortgage lenders to seek repossession after 14 days?
