A quarter of the Labour Shadow Cabinet own multiple homes according to the Daily Mail. This is despite the latest attack on landlords proposed by John McDonnell under a planned ‘Right to Buy’ policy if they were ever to get into government.

Labour want to redistribute wealth and raise living standards by forcing landlords to sell to tenants at a predetermined discount under a scheme similar to Margaret Thatcher’s council right to buy policy in the 80s.

McDonnell said: “You’d want to establish what is a reasonable price, you can establish that and then that becomes the right to buy. You (meaning the Labour party) set the criteria. I don’t think it’s complicated.”

However, it is a case of do as I say not as I do for the Labour front bench as many are confirmed as owning second homes.

Shadow Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry, has three homes including one purchased from a housing association and is receiving rental income on both properties in Surrey and Clerkenwell.

Shadow Brexit Secretary, Sir Keir Starmer, is reported to own a £1.75 million house in Camden along with a £600,000 home in Oxted, Surrey, which he claims was purchased for his sister and does not receive any rent for.

The architect of the proposed theft of property, John McDonnell himself, has been widely reported as owning a holiday chalet bungalow on the water front of the Norfolk Broads as well as his £760,000 home in Hillingdon, West London.

A Labour statement to the Daily Mail said: “It is not Labour Party policy to stop people owning second homes.”

The list continues with:

  • Lord McAvoy, Chief Whip in the House of Lords, renting a flat in London flat, but owns a pub in Glasgow.
  • Dawn Butler, Shadow Women and Equalities secretary, a second home listed on her register of interests
  • Christina Rees, Shadow Welsh secretary, a home in Porthcawl and a £125,000 property in Neath.

How is it possible to come up with these plans and keep a straight face or is that politics for you?

I would guess that the net worth of the majority of landlords is far lower than McDonnell's and his cronies. So how come he is starting with the idea of confiscating the wealth of people poorer than himself?

Also, why assert that they are not against second homes but draw up policies against rental homes? Rental homes are essential to society and to the economy and house people permanently. Second homes are much more of a luxury and non-essential accommodation. If they want to start somewhere why not attack the wastefulness of keeping second homes first? I think we can guess why. As usual, no logic or justice behind their ideas.

“It is not Labour Party policy to stop people owning second homes.” Because the two top Marxists cannot agree.

Jeremy Corbyn is opposed to second homes and wants to double the council tax on them.

John McDonnell thinks second homes are all right as long as they stand empty most of the time. But if they are rented out full time he will enable the occupants to take them from the owner at a discount which would be a loss to the owner and a windfall, unearned gain to the occupant - just for being there.

This contradiction will have to work itself out over time so that a synthesis can emerge from the thesis and antithesis according to the principles of Hegelian dialectic.

Or they could just ask Tom Watson.

Let us not forget that currently there does not appear to be any workable mechanism in place to stop the purchase and resale at market rates of a property. Let alone people doing this in a serial manner. Maybe Labour have forgotten the vitriol they pour out when the council houses were flipped in this manner.

I remember clearly an elderly gentleman in my local buying and later selling up, to retire to the coast in moderate luxury for the times.

The looney left are back after years of absence. One rule for them another for us. Is there not a tax implication for stamer and his rent free sister?
