Green Party members have voted to ‘seek the effective abolition of private landlordism’ at their autumn conference in Bournemouth, signalling a sharp shift in the party’s housing stance.

The motion, ‘Abolish Landlords’, won strong backing from delegates and now forms official party policy.

It pledges to curb private renting through heavy regulation and higher taxes, including rent controls, scrapping Right to Buy, and levying business rates on Airbnbs.

Empty properties would face double taxation, while Buy to Let mortgages would be ended.

Local authorities would also gain the right to buy homes when landlords sell, where properties fail insulation standards, or if they remain vacant for more than six months.

Reduce the PRS

Carla Denyer, the Green MP for Bristol Central, said: “Despite its eye-catching title, it does not actually ‘abolish’ landlords.

“It does, however, address the housing crisis, empowers tenants and improves their wellbeing.

“It contains a range of policies which, over time, would reduce the proportion of the housing market that is privately rented, and increase the proportion of socially rented homes.”

She added: “The motion also calls for the mass building of council homes, which was another manifesto commitment, and adds a proposal for a state-owned housing manufacturer to support these efforts and innovate on housing design and manufacture.”

Green MP landlord

The proposal was introduced by party member Alexander Sallons, who admitted it would be ‘controversial in the party’ because ‘many members are still uncomfortable with the bold and decisive tone’.

However, the motion’s focus on landlords has highlighted potential tensions within the party.

One of the Greens’ four MPs, Adrian Ramsay, rents out a property in Norfolk, according to the parliamentary register of interests.

The Daily Mail reports that the home provides more than £10,000 a year in rental income.

Mr Ramsay said on social media: “I co-own a property with my ex-wife, which we used to live in.

“I don’t make a profit from it as I have kept the rent below market rate. I don’t intend to be a landlord long-term.”

PRS ‘has failed’

Landlords might be interested to learn that the motion states: “The private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class.

“This motion makes it clear Green Party policy is to seek the effective abolition of private landlordism and our support for building council housing.”

It concludes: “The Green Party believes the existence of private landlords adds no positive value to the economy or society, that the relationship between landlord and tenant is inherently and intrinsically extractive and exploitative.”

The Green Party is now in the hands of radical socialists/communists who would turn this country into something like Venezuela. I remember when Jeremy Corbin (of a similar political view) had nothing but praise for Hugo Chavez, who turned Venezuela from one of the richest countries in South America inot an economic basket case with socialist policies.

    These people never learn!!!

The ” Green Party” is an irrelevance which emerged after environmentalists and Tofu devouring ,sandal wearing Trustafarians in the old Liberal Party emerged after the so called ” Liberal Democrats” emerged as Committee of 300 controlled opposition.
Their views are irrelevant as they have no chance of attaining power or becoming ” Kingmakers”.
The Conservatives are a busted flush ,Badenoch is finished and will be replaced and Labour and Starmer will be eventually put to the sword once our terminally ill dying King or his successor prorogues Parliament .
Tenants ,particularly uncreditworthy ,vexatious and troublesome ones are going to find life very hard as hostels for them have not been built.
A temporary fix for them could be converted shipping containers on brownfield land with workfare for those who are benefit recipients.
Sympathy for such people is in my case almost nonexistent and I certainly dont want them near me.
The good ones are fine as long as they have reasonable expectations but the government is going to punish them as landlords pass extra taxes on to them

I think that you might be right.

According to this post, the policy states “The private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class.”

I run a small business and I’m a small portfolio landlord. I wasn’t aware that I was part of a “landlord class”. So that “landlord class” would lump me together with plumbers, electricians, builders, public-sector employees trying to supplement their already generous public sector pensions, and MPs including both labour and green party MPs.

It would be tempting to say in response to the publication of this policy that the Green Party just made themselves unelectable….although the truth is that in a national election they were not electable anyway. But coming out with this kind of radical left-wing b******t just means that not only can anybody with any stake in society not afford to vote for them in a national election (even as a protest vote) it also means that nobody can afford to vote for them in a local election either.

“Green Party”…you didn’t just do any of your local councillors any favours. Nil points.

As for what the policy claims, the PRS isn’t a “vehicle for wealth extraction”. What it is is a vehicle for INVESTMENT from the private sector in a socially-useful commodity, i.e. housing. I have often wondered at the fact that if I wanted to invest my pension for example in housing then I am not permitted to do it, even though there is a shortage of housing…but I am permitted for example to invest my pension in companies supplying armaments to bomb Palestinians.

Any competent “green” party would see this and understand that even if you believed in the EPC system then it makes no sense at all to penalise investment in housing at EPC band C or above.

Green Party…you just did Donald Trump and his followers a huge favour by demonstrating that you are even whackier than he is.

A far better idea would be to abolish ‘all’ political parties! That would certainly put a smile on my face!

The post says that “…proposal was introduced by party member Alexander Sallons, who admitted it would be ‘controversial in the party’ because ‘many members are still uncomfortable with the bold and decisive tone’”

It isn’t just green party members that are uncomfortable with the ‘tone’. My local green party councillor seems quite nice and well-meaning…but there’s now no way that I could ever afford to vote for him in an area where previously he could have anticipated local support.

Isn’t it funny how some of the extremists at the ‘right’ and ‘left’ of politics are able to take over some of these parties who previously might have had something sensible to add and effectively destroy them?

Local green party councillors…your leadership just executed you. Time to find another party.

So ALL their voters/supporters must be either home owners or full time eco warriors currently living in the woods in self knitted tents then?

Talk about turkeys voting for Xmas! hahah!

The turkeys that are about to be stuffed are the local ‘Green-Party’ councillors.

If the post is correct and this is what the ‘green-party-members’ voted for, then the ‘green-party members’ just voted to destroy their own green-party councillors in most regions that have major concerns about loss of green space due to over-development and where they had any real chance of getting themselves elected.

The liberal democrats must be rubbing their hands with glee. Or they would be if they weren’t very busy right now promoting the Reform party.

So, if there are any intelligent green-party- councillors out there that understand politics…it’s time to change party because somebody is about to shove an onion up your backside.
