I just applied for Home Insurance with Hiscox, I was declined because I am a Landlord!

I made it clear it was for my home only, but it made no difference.

I did not realise even insurers held us in such contempt.

Has anyone else had this, why are we seen as such low life?

You say it is because you are a landlord, did they state this? Seems unlikely. Hiscox have been in a lot of bother recently due to their failure to honour business interruption claims caused by covid. Perhaps their underwriters are being extra cautious as a result.

You should try the insurance price comparison websites and should get reasonable quotes.

I approached a gas engineering company to fix a rental property boiler and they were quite open about the fact that I would have to pay them a £100 call out charge in advance purely because I was a landlord. They told me that it was their experience that landlords do not pay up!
Wow! Needless to say they did not get the work.

I have just had a car insurance premium renewal notice from Hiscox. They have increased the premium from £237.29 to £524.82 for the same cover. Needless to say, I have changed insurer and will be paying £242.00 with them.

Sounds very odd, out of interest did the application specify what type of Landlord?

Are they even allowed to discriminate like that? With all the discrimination law nowadays surely they cannot discriminate on the grounds of occupation. Bizarre. Still, they probably did you a favour, moving insurer is normally the only way to keep premiums down to a sensible level.

Maybe Hiscox think the OP is a pub landlord who lives on the premises?
(like my paternal grandfather's parents from mid- 1870s to very early 1900s)

I was declined online, so I called them. I made my occupation clear, but she said sorry, no landlords. Other than my occupation, she only had my name.
We are clearly undesirable..........

When I tried to claim the self employed covid grant (twice) due to my income beig affected the inland revenue declined my application on line and then actually wrote to me advising me that i am not self employed but an investor and investments can go up or down as such having property and renting it out does not make it an occupation.Their words.
So in future think of another title as one can with your car insurance. Before i retired to become a 'landlord' i was a plumber unless i was applying for car insurance then i became a gas engineer which was 30% cheaper!

Hi Michael
Curiosity! Learning point!
Did the number of properties you let out had any bearing on their decision.
Why did you have to tell them that you’re a landlord to get your own home insured?

I told them my name and occupational only, that was enough to be declined.
