Government sponsored moves to Spain?

300,000 new homes are needed each year in the UK apparently. On the other hand in Spain there are 388,000 properties that have never sold and are lying empty. It seems to me that people could be incentivised to go and live there instead of the UK. No idea how the plan would work, but this is what I call the kernel of a good idea.empty spanish property

Pensioners, for example, can have their UK state pensions paid to them in Spain and with a few sweeteners might be persuaded and migrants who otherwise might have settled in the UK might be persuaded, but that is less plausible as the unemployment level in Spain is dire.

The link below points to the problem in Spain, which could be a partial solution to our own housing problem: The British and Spanish Governments should have their heads banged together to come up with something.

Hi Ros,

I can't believe that there is a possibility they may have to demolish empty property in Spain.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if two countries could work together like that.

Unfortunately, it looks like the world is fracturing more at the moment rather than getting closer together 🙁

Far too practical and sensible for the government to even consider it ! They can't even get it right utilising spare capacity in the UK where they would do well to genuinely address the north/south divide - Northern Powerhouse ?!! Yeah right George, like you really care.

Yes, quite. I have benefit tenants turning up their collective nose at a newly refurbished, double glazed, centrally heated 3 bed terrace in Middlesbrough where the rent is set at the LHA rate, so a free home for a family. The area is not to their liking because of antisocial behaviour issues.

The sense of entitlement is very interesting. I used to also come across this, but less so now as the housing shortage spreads to my area.

What about all the empty homes in the north of England along with the brown field sites in the north that could be built on. All it would take is most government funded jobs to be moved out of London.

HMG wouldn't want it, because ultimately it would affect their precious London.

As far as Northern Powerhouse is concerned, to put their money where their mouths are, Parliament should be repositioned to, say, the historic capital of York whilst Westminster Palace is renovated. But no, they can't leave their playground.

Time it became an independent city state.

The health service is great in Spain - I think we must have funded a load of it. I broke my wrist there on holiday, had a room to myself, straightforward operation the same day and didn't cost me a penny.

I know - that's what I meant - that a lot of the funds probably came from the UK. We used to be net contributors to Spain and then when we started to give them a bit less and the money went to Eastern Europe instead, they were furious!
