The government has announced £20 million in legal support and advice for tenants facing eviction.

The government claim the funding will help those at risk of eviction and debt to “get the help they need before they end up in court”.

Propertymark says long-term reform of the housing justice system is needed to tackle the court backlog.

Vulnerable people can access the support they need

In a government press release, the £20 million in extra funding is aimed at vulnerable households facing eviction to get free legal advice and support “before they end up in court faced with the prospect of a costly legal bill they can’t afford.”

The government add it will also help those with “debt problems get early advice on how to prevent their finances from further spiralling.”

Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, said: “It is absolutely vital that those facing some of life’s most challenging situations, such as debt, eviction, family issues, are able to access the support they need.

“This funding will ensure that essential legal support and information is available to those who need it most and will put the sector on a sustainable footing, as part of our Plan for Change.”

Access to justice is a critical part of a well-functioning housing sector

Propertymark welcomes the funding to support vulnerable households, particularly in helping landlords and lenders work constructively to prevent disputes from escalating to court, but warns that more must be done to address the court backlog.

The industry body said on its website: “Propertymark has long argued that access to justice is a critical part of a well-functioning housing sector. Delays, complexity and under-resourcing within the courts system can be damaging for tenants, landlords and agents alike, often prolonging disputes and increasing costs for all parties.

“We have consistently called for reforms that improve efficiency, fairness and confidence in housing justice. This includes ensuring that people facing possession proceedings can access timely legal advice, while also enabling landlords to resolve legitimate cases without excessive delay.”

Propertymark adds: “In our engagement with Parliament, including debates in the House of Lords, we have stressed that a justice system which works well benefits everyone in the housing sector.

“Faster, clearer and more accessible processes help prevent disputes escalating and support better outcomes for tenants and landlords.”

Such a caring government, I am in tears. More wasted taxes. If it’s about “fairness” why aren’t they also allocating this for landlords.
Not the real reason of course why they are wasting this money.

It is easy to Clarify 8 weeks of arrears.
Which is supposed to be mandatory .
By the time these rent dodging Tenants get into court the arrears will be 12 months at best.
By increasing the time before we can start the process even good tenants will be so far behind they will not be able to recover.

Cynically, I think the only ‘trick’ intended is how they can keep tenants in LLs’ properties for as long as possible, using every trick in the book to defeat a LLs claim for possession, irrespective of reason, rights or wrongs and by whom, so that expenses/losses fall to LLs rather than the public purse.

It looks like we are heading towards a left wing, socialist, third world economic policies that this country doesn’t deserve.

What person in the right mind would want to be a landlord under this situation?

It’s like all landlords are bad and they must be punished. In fact, the landlords are helping the social structure of the government. Without their help, the government will struggle to keep up with the housing demands.

Can the Government not allocate £20 million towards more housing or supporting the Landlords currently providing it?

This approach is not mending a broken system but just encouraging more victim-like behaviour

The government were struggling years ago. Now they are completely failing. When the billions invested in the PRS moves off we will see tent towns like we see in ‘developing’ countries. What the action groups don’t realize is that once people like me have sold up, our interest in this housing disaster will be largely academic.. Landlords don’t have to be landlords…

We are already governed by a far left party but that is never mentioned, it’s only ever attacks on so called far right. Just look at the governments back bench that run the country, which is not just worrying for landlords but for most of the UK population.

Yet more legal aid for charities like Shelter. In possession claims which are being challenged landlords need to start claiming fraudulent non payment of rent then there’s grounds for criminal proceedings against the tenant.
If the government really wanted to solve non payment or rent / arrears possession they should automatically be the rent guarantor. They can always recover unpaid rent through taxation or benefit deductions.
