As a landlord, someone very much involved in housing, I could not fail to be affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster in West London.

It raises questions to be answered including the old chestnut myself and many other private landlords raise: why do local authorities not always maintain their own housing to the same standards they set for private landlords? However, the priority at the moment is to help the victims.

The residents (and their immediate neighbours) of Grenfell Tower still need help. A wishlist has been set up on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/118PVSCYUF46H/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_an_wl_o_G.tqzbXCA67Y3
or donations (any clothes, toiletry, bedding or food items) can be left at any of these locations:
221 W11 4EY
95 W11 4EQ
210 W10 6QY

More importantly, a crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help the victims now and in the longer term: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/categories/emergencies/grenfell-tower-fire

Many thanks

The donation I made did have the gift aid info so I think it's reasonable to assume it's a charity accepting the donation.

Your points are noted nevertheless

As you've brought up the name of Jeremy Corbyn I think it's worth pointing out that in the very recent Labour party manifesto there was no mention of spending many millions on making tower blocks safer to live in, whether that be sprinkler systems, removal of cladding, or extra fire escapes etc. There was, however, the promise to remove tuition fees at a cost of many millions. Now which do you believe was the vote catcher? Yet I'm 'treated' to the stomach-churning vision of same JC (the Messiah he most certainly is not!) putting his arm around the shoulders of local residents and whispering, 'there, there dearie the Labour party REALLY cares about you. Of course they do!

I see what you're saying but who are the alternative? Who would treat for the poor and dispossessed with any sort of respect?
The tories certainly haven't shown interest in any but the better-off.
Realistically - unless some brand new political party arises out of nowhere (like happened in France) - I can't see who but Labour would even listen to those who have been born poor or disabled

Sandra, I really don't believe that you, or anyone should involve politicians directly in this tragedy. We can argue till the sun goes down about who cares most. The fact is they care only enough to get elected every five years. It's a fact that this tower was built in 1974 under a Labour government. Were they showing care for the poor and disabled? Subsequent governments and councils, whether Tory or Labour, have trodden the exact same path. We are all culpable for believing and voting for any of them. What is needed now is action, not talk. Sprinklers should be installed, retrospectively, in EVERY tower block. At the risk of repeating what many fire safety experts have stated, 'nobody has ever died in a building fire where sprinklers were installed'.

Hear, hear - this is less about who was in power when that building was refurbished as to WHY the fire happened and spread and only a proper investigation can establish that. Some of the PREMATURE blaming of politicians from BOTH the main parties is sickening.

In your comments you suggest we don't bring politicians in to this - and then you go on to mention the block was built while Labour was in power. A bit contradictory, no? Perhaps you mean don't malign the tories.
I've been watching the aftermath of this tragedy avidly. Many interviewees on TV and bloggers online (I mean blogs going back 3-4 years before this happened) and there is no doubt that the council and it's management company was warned - often - that something like this would happen unless they took tenants' concerns seriously. They refused to do so.
And whether we want to face it or not - 'politics' (for those who want to remain neutral)is very much at the root of what happened.

Sandra, it was you that brought politics into it to begin with. My point would be that instead of trying to point score, would it not be better to wait until the appropriate time before 'blaming'? You have your reasons for supporting the political party of your choice as do I, let's please leave it there until everyone knows more about why this gross tragedy occurred.

I agree. And let's hope it doesn't get kicked into the long grass like the inquiry into the 2009 Camberwell fire that cost lives.
