Support a homelessness charity which provides actual shelter!

The Landlords Alliance campaign to stop B&Q supporting anti-private landlord charity Shelter and to get them to instead support a homelessness charity which provides actual shelter has gathered pace this week. Landlords and other property professionals have been hugely supportive of the campaign. As one commentator said about Shelter on Property Industry Eye:

“It constantly posts pictures of mould etc and always blames the landlord.  Never does It mention how a tenant might be contributing to condensation by their lifestyle.

It supports taxing landlords to bankruptcy via SECTION 24.

It supports tenants from hell remaining in the property.

It encourages tenants to wait for the bailiffs.

It refuses to work with the PRS for the good of tenants.”

Today, a letting agent has told her story of how a landlord has had a terrible time, not only because of some dreadful, anti-social, non-paying tenants, but also because of Shelter’s support for these, which has made their awful predicament so much worse. Agent tells supporter B&Q how Shelter has allowed ‘tenants from hell’ to stay in property

People who support and donate to Shelter need to know that this is how they operate ‘on the front line’, in addition to their national campaigning against the private rented sector. And Shelter think they’re the good guys?

I hope this post is allowed, as it is relevant to this thread. I've today launched "The £1.00 Homelessness Challenge"

With Shelter currently estimating over 320,000 homeless people in the UK, it is no wonder that we are receiving an increase in the number of people being referred to our supported accommodation, and by a wider range of statutory and voluntary organisations. Our main limiting factor is lack of funding for our Support Workers, but at just £30.00 per person per week, this is by far the most cost effective way of helping people out of homelessness, so we have now launched an appeal on the Just Giving website asking people to donate £1.00 towards helping the homeless, and then share the appeal with your social media friends and contacts. Take a look at our Just Giving page for more details: http://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/homeless-support

ALL landlords with mortgages with Nationwide should tell them how they feel, and that if funding continues next year, they'll be looking to move.
Nationwide should be encouraged however to support the homeless, practically, by donating to Crisis, or Wallich ( in Wales )
( It would be fair to point out that landlords have supported organisations like Crisis and Wallich - and Shelters sponsors might do well to ponder that. )

It appears that the minimum donation possible via the Just Giving website is £2.00, so I have amended the post on the Just Giving site accordingly: http://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/homeless-support

I have another idea regarding Shelter.

Landlords should call Shelter on 0300 330 1234 and call on them to end their campaign against landlords and letting agents as it is clearly against the interest of the tenants they claim to help.

To quote from Shelter's email asking people to call Ludlow Thompson "The more calls they get, the more they'll know this approach is unacceptable. Send a clear message to Ludlow and other letting agents like the - enough is enough, it's time to change."

Indeed, Shelter, enough is enough.
