A Scottish Green MSP has tabled an amendment to the Housing (Scotland) Bill which would prevent tenants from being evicted in winter months – forever.

Maggie Chapman says her proposal will eliminate the threat of evictions during the chilliest months, spanning November to March.

That would, she says, mean no renter facing homelessness when the weather turns harsh.

Evictions are stressful for renters

Ms Chapman said: “Everyone deserves stability and a warm and safe place to call home.

“Evictions are really stressful for renters, particularly during a cold winter where temperatures are low, and budgets are tight.”

She added: “The temporary protections that the Scottish Greens introduced to curb winter evictions were crucial in protecting people and families struggling to get through the coldest, harshest months of the year.”

That’s when the Greens formed part of the Scottish Government and brought in a short-term ban on evictions under the then-Minister Patrick Harvie.

Call for permanent protections

Ms Chapman continued: “It is vital that we make these changes permanent. That means taking action to ensure that nobody is at risk of eviction over winter in Scotland.

“That is why I am lodging these proposals and calling for permanent protections to be put in place.”

She adds: “Scotland is in a housing emergency, and evictions only intensify this issue.

“There must be measures taken to ensure that things do not worsen for renters who need our support.”

Protections from eviction

A spokesperson for the Scottish government said: “Scotland provides renters with some of the strongest protections from eviction anywhere in the UK.

“Landlords cannot ask tenants to leave without reason, so tenants can assert their rights without fear of eviction, and we would hope no one is forced out of their homes over the winter period.

“The Housing Bill delivers on our New Deal for Tenants and implements a national system of rent controls.”

Too cold and wet in the winter! Too hot and sweaty in the summer! In the spring and Autumn the kids are in school more often and the trees are either growing or shedding leaves! I understand their concerns and will pass onto my local MP.

All the LL needs to do is use the very same 'evidence' that the Greens already have commissioned that shows that global warming is making the scottish winters warmer and Bobs your Uncle/Aunty/non binary relative.

No tenant will be evicted in a colder winter going forward then there has been in the past.

NB how is the squeezed income/lack of budgeting a problem for the LL if the tenant at the time passed affordability at the time the tenancy started? The tenant is the only one that can take action to remedy THEIR situation.

I signed an AST with the tenant, not adoption papers!
