Overseas investor wishes to invest in UK

Hello all 118 readers.

I would just like to ask anyone if they can point me in the right direction to go. Overseas investor wishes to invest in UK

My sister-in law who is resident in South Africa, but is British, wishes to invest the proceeds of a windfall in UK property (about £400,000).

Is there a reputable company she can use to source the property/properties?

I also live near Manchester and have a couple of rental properties so if they were in this area I could manage them for her.

Any suggetions welcome.

Should she buy outright or get a few properties with mortgages etc.?

Thank you for your time.

David

Hi David

Why not offer to source the properties for your sister yourself? Check out this Property Research Tool to assist your due diligence >>> https://www.property118.com/property-reseach-tool/

I suggest she buys in a company name for tax purposes.

In regards to mortgages I recommend a discussion with Mark Edwards - see https://www.property118.com/member/?id=3042

Also check out this advice section >>> https://www.property118.com/how-to-become-a-respected-profitable-landlord/60765/

My final suggestion at this stage is for you and your sister book some private consultation time with me. You could start with a 30 minute session (three-way Skype call), which only costs £100. Please see >>> https://www.property118.com/consultancy-mark-alexander/61522/

Hi Mark, I think this is what she was angling for and I can probably find time to do it. I am just not sure as she lives abroad whether she can get a mortgage if she wants to buy more than 1 property, tax liability. I have heard of these property find companies and thought they may be on top of rules and regs for overseas investors. would not like to make an expensive mistake

@ David Simpkins

Dear David,
I am a SA citizen who invested in BTL property in London circa 2009 . I am more than willing to share my experiences of buying and renting out property as an offshore investor with both you and your sister-in-law should you be interested. I assume though, that as she is a British citizen she may be afforded more investment rights than a non citizen. Perhaps I could provide advice on the real hurdles of BTL if one lives in another country.

I also live in another Country - I'm resident in Malta.

I'd be interested to compare notes with you via this forum and to discuss best practice 🙂

You have a much larger portfolio than I do and you have recently moved to Malta after permanent residence in the UK. I believe you are also a British citizen.

The BTL scenario for non UK residents and the challenges of being a non UK resident Landlord are thus very different - but as always I welcome discourse that is informative and accessible to all Landlords.

I am a member and avid reader of Property118 posts. I find sites such as you offer invaluable advice and would encourage all non UK investors to avail themselves of any forums that provide varied and constructive comment on property investment.

Keep well.

I was born and lived in Manchester most of my life. I'm a practising cardiologist who also invest in properties too. Happy for you to bounce ideas off me or I can find deals for you. Firstly you need to book your call with Mark to get the right foundations. After that by all means get in touch. amjedkhan@talktalk.net
