NatWest shut down all of my Bank Accounts – What Can I do?

I Have been with Nat West since I left School – over 50 years ago now. I have never let them down or had a problem with them. Out of the blue, with no notice or warning, yesterday they shut down all of my accounts. My Direct Debits have started bouncing already. All of my money is in those accounts.

The customer relations department seemed to be as stunned as I was – they say as everything is shut down they cannot access any information and all of their efforts to make enquiries internally have drawn blanks or hit brick walls.

Any suggestions? We are totally desperate. Does anyone know a specialist solicitor who may be able to assist? If someone had told me that this could happen I would have never believed them!

Thanks for reading this.

Colin

I really feel for you Matthew. It is unbelievable in the western world that Banks can take your money with no explanation - they just point to T's & C's stating they have no obligation to do so. And I had it as well where some 'secret' information is shared with other Banks messing up you getting another account. luckily I had another account with another bank that I used to use for my fathers pension and expenses - kept £100 in it to keep it alive - thank goodness i did! But when I wanted to make it into a joint account with my wife their 'systems' wouldn't allow it but we got it done eventually, I got another new one with one of the online Banks - Chase - its worth a try. And you can still deposit payments via NatWest - how ironic. I appealed to the Financial Ombudsman - back in early August - they recently told me that it is taking eight months to deal with cases. I will update everyone when I get their take but I bet they will side with the bank. How can someone arbitrarily find you guilty of something without telling you what you are accused of? Luckily after complaining to everyone within NatWest I got my money reinstated after two weeks. All the best Matthew. Best Regards, Colin.

It is a fundamental principle of United Kingdom law that the defendant is entitled to be able to see the case against him or her.

Totally agree Beaver - but Banks apparently have managed to get away with T's and C's which make up their own rules and our ongoing use of accounts is deemed to be acceptance of these T's and C's. The solicitors we consulted said there is little than can be done in law. We will see what the ombudsman says when the time comes. All Nat West have to do with the ombudsman is claim that they suspect money laundering and they can get away with anything even though they haven't stated it to the customer or provided any evidence for the customer to respond to. Please understand this hasn't happened to me - it's just the word on the street. What happened to innocent until proven guilty!
