Meet Gavin Barwell - Housing Minister - Tell Him What You Think

Housing Minister Gavin Barwell is about to go on a tour of the UK to discuss Housing from 20th February to 6th March.

Is there a message you would like to give him?

As you know, the Government has published a housing White Paper, ‘Fixing Our Broken Housing Market’, setting out our strategy to build the homes that this country needs. It contains a comprehensive set of proposals to deliver the step change in house building that is required. But the challenge of increasing supply cannot be met by government alone.

Mr Barwell said …. “That is why I want to hear from a wide range of stakeholders – Councillors, local authority planning and housing officers, large and small developers, housing associations, estate agents, letting agents and others – about what they think about the White Paper and how we can work together to fix our broken housing market. To that end, I am going to spend the next couple of weeks travelling around the country trying to hear from as many housing and planning professionals as possible. I would be grateful if you could use your networks to spread the word and encourage attendance. We expect to hold events on the following days in the following locations. Further details regarding each of the events and how to book places will follow shortly.”

This is a great idea! 118 has massive following so there should be no reason why people shouldn't turn up in numbers at each event and explain how his policies are hurting the sector. Barwell is known to be generally supportive of private landlords and is suspected of secretly disagreeing with S24. Since he wants to hear the views of all stakeholders, we should all be making sure he gets to hear them.

Annoyingly, because of devolved housing policy, this grand tour is only taking place in England. Those of us in Wales will still have to suffer the consequences of the Government's lunatic tax policy though...

I agree with Jamie that all the signs are that Barwell is a different kettle of fish to the others, talking bullshit does not come naturally to him and he does talk more sense than the others. I believe he must have had some influence on the changed emphasis towards renting also being a valid tenure, so we just need to push a bit further to get our part of the sector (the vast majority of it of course, with BTR being what we call in my parts 'a little dwt') re-legitimised once more. At the moment we are being rendered invisible - not even meriting a mention in the letter above - and this ludicrous treatment of the backbone and in fact nearly the whole body of rented housing in the UK has to stop.

I have subscribed to this post so when the venues are announced could you add them in the comments? I can't find any links or information about his visits anywhere else online - strange.

I'm sure there will be more online announcements. We are often the first.

As soon as venues and times are confirmed for the later dates we will publish them here.

That's a great idea but I live near Cambridge so I'll be going to that meeting but it's not clear who I should contact at the County Council and there's nothing online as yet. I guess I'll have to wait for further information to be released . I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I suggest you just call the Council, quote the date he's coming. They are sure to know all about it and will put you through to the right person.

When you have that persons details please post his/her name and direct telephone number here.

Thanks in advance.
