There’s widespread discontent among landlords over media depictions of them and the PRS – it’s now fallen to just 9% of those who say it is ‘fair and accurate’, research reveals.

According to a survey from Landbay, that’s a sharp decline from 19% of landlords who said the same in a similar 2023 survey.

The survey showed minimal variation between those managing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) or Multi-Unit Freehold Blocks (MUFBs) and those with smaller portfolios.

‘Traducing buy to let landlords’

The lender’s sales and distribution director, Rob Stanton, said: “The media – chiefly social but also the mainstream press – is traducing buy to let landlords.

“People seem to have a view that landlords are rolling in cash making huge profits; the situation has got worse over the last year presumably encouraged by the legislative agenda.”

He added: “As more landlords – small business owners – leave the market in the face of counter-productive red tape, the landlord-bashers are going to get a wake-up call when they realise the housing crisis has not disappeared and – because the supply of rental properties has shrunk – rents have risen.”

Big difference in landlord opinion

However, Landbay’s survey, which was conducted in May with landlords owning around 3,000 properties, does show a notable divide based on borrowing structure.

Only 4% of landlords borrowing as individuals viewed media coverage as fair, compared to 10% of those using limited company structures or a mix of both.

Landlords with smaller portfolios were particularly critical.

Just 4% of those owning one to three properties felt the media portrayal was accurate, compared to 10% of those with four or more.

Mr Stanton said: “Landlords with only a few properties tend to be those that have invested all their savings and inheritance into their properties in the hope of providing themselves with a retirement income.

“I think they genuinely care about the state of their properties and therefore find their demonisation even more unfair.”

I decided to login and reply to this article and the first article to pop up was from Generation Rent to say that Landlords can easily afford to pay for EPC upgrades ( With No Limits on cost )
What planet do the staff at Generation Rent live on ?
Landlord bashing is such huge fun and No one can question the wisdom of these groups and Government support in New legislation designed to destroy Landlord and Tenants relations
I along with thousands of Landlords up and down the country WORK hard to maintain both our properties and care for our Tenants despite what many pressure groups, Gutter press and Left wing Government ministers say

Generation Rent and their ilk are not pressure groups, they are organised Weapons of Mass Destruction, if you can't bomb a country there's nothing to stop you dismantling one piece at a time, like a massive game of Jenga

Well there is one good thing to this thread, the word 'Traducing' has been added to my vocabulary.

I no longer care what people think or say about me or my chosen profession, I have tenants queueing up for my properties, that's good enough.

Those landlords with the stomach to hold on to their hard-earned property may do well. I don’t have the stomach unfortunately however, as I was always told, they are not building more land, invest wisely.

When we loom at government policy, just think - what does this mean for tax receipts?
