There would be some very interesting ‘unintended consequences’ – like favouring migrant tenants, students and those on benefits, who definitely wouldn’t qualify for mortgages. In HMOs, often the individuals stay for 6 months or 12 months and only rent one room in a house, so I can’t see a problem for us there. I think therefore that HMOs would proliferate and it would be very hard for families and young people and/or the more middle class tenants to find rented accommodation.
The vast majority of my current tenants wouldn’t meet stringent mortgage requirements although I suppose a purchase of 35% under the market value would mean a low LTV so that might help them. It would of course be criminal for the state to seize our assets in this way. This bonkers nonsense illustrates once more how we need to combat the Government through legal means and make sure that we do our damndest to overturn S24, which is the worst attack on landlords in history. If we can successfully get it overturned any future Government will be more wary about introducing bonkers, anti-landlord, discriminatory measures as they’ll know it will lead to a prolonged legal battle and cost them a stack in resources and legal costs.
Previously, when this idea was mooted by the Labour Party it was quite different – it was something like the landlord gifts 11%, the state gifts 11% and I can’t remember where the other 11% was coming from. They’ve simplified it so just the landlord pays!

Chris – I agree with you.
I am not sure what the exact figures are, but some reports suggest that 6,415 affected West Brom borrowers will be sharing the £27.5m. Now that the JR fund has reached £100k, if each of those 6,415 donated just £23.39 to the JR, the £250k stretch target would be instantly achieved.

Mark (Shine – so many Marks here now!).
That suggestion is absolutely superb. How wonderful would it be if we could get that message out to all the West Brom case supporters – just £23.39 each. How could we fail to achieve the £250k? Please, everybody, we have worked so, so hard – MA particularly has worked so, SO hard – to give us a campaign that Steve, Chris and the JR team can take on and take forward, it would be mindblowingly disappointing if we couldn’t raise the funds.
Well done MS for that suggestion, we will need as much help as we can possibly get so all positive suggestions like this hugely welcome.

To put it in to perspective, if all the estimated 2 million landlords donated 8 pence each, the remaining 150k for the (initial) stretch target would be reached.
Using the govts figures that only 1 in 5 LLs will affected by Section 24, then if those 400k landlords donated 38 pence each, the stretch target would be achieved.
The reason that I and others previously mentioned that West Brom case winners may be more easily persuaded to contribute to Steve and Chris’s ongoing JR approach, is that they (affected WB customers) have seen or will personally see how legal action has produced real results that they will personally directly benefit from, thanks to MA and his team.

Hi
How do we get contact details for the 6,415 affected West Brom borrowers?
We can may be put an ad in various papers asking them to get in touch?
Worst scenario like some one suggested at the summit there were 500 of us there, if all of us contribute £300.00 each to reach the balance of £150,000

Hi Eden
Perhaps any of West Brom’s customers here and elsewhere could simply ask their lender to forward a link to:
http://www.crowdjustice.co.uk/case/tenanttax/
to all their BTL clients?
If coordinated in advance to send emails to the lender(s) at the same time on the same date it might help to attract their attention?
