Corbyn’s first question at PMQT was about the hot topic of housing

I seen that this morning! It is concerning that left-winger’s opening gambit was on landlords.

Yes, I’m signed up for these missives as well. These politicians are so unimaginative. It’s always about attacking; why can’t they come up with positive policies to get the country building? Criticising how existing housing is is not the way forward. And the cheek of the guy to be against right to buy for social housing but in favour of it for private housing. I still wonder how that would work… you could even be in negative equity on a rental house and be forced to sell at a discount. And are people on benefits going to get mortgages? How would that work? Mark Carney is sounding worried about this Corbynomics!

Consumer buy-to-let mortgages will become regulated in March 2016 as part of the implementation of the EU Mortgage Credit Directive. However, independently verified government analysis suggests that approximately 86% of the market will remain unregulated, and that the costs imposed by this change are not of a sufficient scale to affect the supply of rental properties in the UK.
Consumer BTL is that people who could not sell so rented?
Is this included in the calcs the government as done?

The rapid increase in the number of households privately renting could be linked to the decline in the number of households getting on the housing ladder, usually through a mortgage. This is mainly because of the increasing difficulty for first time buyers to raise deposits for a mortgage

I think he is correct to be against RTB for social housing (as it depletes the stock of social housing) but he should oppose it on any grounds (as it reduces properties available to rent) unless the government is going to make up the shortfall between the market price and the RTB price – like a handout to FTBs. I really don’t understand what is wrong with renting. Before Thatcher, it was quite usual to rent, and it seems to be quite usual in other EU countries.

Hi BTL I S
The Prime Minister did not refute the claim about “the extortionate rents charged by some private sector landlords in this country”, so Corbyn got away with it. Who are these landlords who force people into tenancy agreements that they don’t want, and then extort money from them?
