Am I liable for previous leaseholder’s debt?
Hi, I bought a flat in June 2021. The previous leasehold had a debt to the freeholder for service charges of around £400, for the year to March 2021.
The freeholder is chasing me for this sum, saying that, because they issued the demand in September 2021, I am liable for the debt
How can I be liable for someone else’s debt, and from a period prior to my ownership?
Thanks,
Martin

Kizzie, you seem determined to have the last word.
I didn’t say AI speculates. It sometimes hallucinates as Martin points out. Yes, an AI engine “answers the specific question put to it” but it doesn’t like to say: “I don’t know what I am talking about so take this answer with a large pinch of salt.” Sometimes, the answers given are wrong, as you have found out.
I have been practising as a commercial property solicitor for 40 years and know a bit about leases, arrears and forfeiture. Your contributions on this thread are not helpful to the OP.

It is not for you to judge whether the contributions to these threads are useful or otherwise.
It is for the original contributor who is the leaseholder holding their own lease contract which binds him/her and the party to it.
AI does the donkey work and provides a steer for most leaseholders who unfortunately purchase a lease without their conveyancing solicitors providing basic information as to its significance, as can be noted from enquiries to 118 where most often the first advice is to read their lease.

If an OP is able to judge whether contributions are helpful, so am I. The OP lacks a conveyancing solicitor’s knowledge, as do you. In this case your AI answer has given incomplete/incorrect information. That is not helpful and my pointing it out is fair comment.
Martin has said nothing about the advice he received or lack thereof from his conveyancing solicitor. Speculating about whether the solicitor provided “basic information” or was negligent also gets us nowhere.
There may come a time when artificial intelligence does lawyers out of a job, but it is not yet.

Hi Kizzie, this is all rather confusing, do you have any professional qualifications or experience in this field? I have some problems of my own you may be able to help with. Thanks
