Chartered Institute of Housing warns 250,000 social rented homes could be lost by 2020
An article in The Planner reports social housing numbers are dropping much faster than they are being built and that the total number of social housing homes available to rent decreased by over 120,000 from 2012 to 2016.![]()
The PRS has taken up much of the slack during this period, but that is all changing now, thanks to the Government’s war on landlords. I wonder what these figures will be by 2020?
Chief executive at CIH, Terrie Alafat CBE said, “the loss of so many of these types of homes is extremely worrying at a time we need more not less.
“It is positive that the government has announced new investment in housing in recent months but many of the homes which will be funded will still be out of reach to many people.
“If the government really wants to solve our housing crisis it must recognise that building more homes at genuinely affordable rents will be crucial to help those who need housing the most. We are urging it to consider how, at the very least, it can prevent this decline. We should be seeing an increase in numbers, not a significant decline.”

This government needs to listen to the experts. Stop attacking landlords immediately. Work with them and try to solve the housing shortages together

@Steve,
I agree with you in principle but it was George Osborne listening to the wrong “experts” or people purporting to be “experts” that led to Sec.24 being introduced.

Ok. That was a slip. Listen to the people who understand the ramifications
