Tenants smelly cooking
My tenants of five months seem to live on curry. The flat smells of it every time I go around, despite my asking them to open windows and ensure the cooker hood is used. A tenant from an adjoining flat has already left because of the continuous smell.
Three questions:
(a) can I evict due to the offensive smell?
(b) can I make a claim off their deposit for deep cleaning and replacement of impregnated furnishings that won’t clean?
(c) in future, can I write something into the agreement (as I have with smoking) to prevent strong smelling spices being used in the property?
Many thanks ![]()

Should’t this thread be titled “Smelly people”, because its not just tenants that can smell. 🙂

That’s a fair point Vanessa, I have amended the article title to better reflect this basis of this discussion. Instead of being called “Smelly Tenants” I have changed it to “Tenants Smelly Cooking” 🙂

Heh heh Mark! I think that’s a better reflection of the discussion topic anyway. 🙂
Seriously though, with so much landlord anti-sentiment in the media, we, as a community, should always try and lead by example and that means not stereotyping any demographic of person!!
I personally do not want to be lumped in with “greedy landlords” for instance. 🙂

HOT TIP
I wrote a article some time ago called “Landlords Refub Tips – Know Your Onions” – see >>> https://www.property118.com/landlords-refurb-tips-know-your-onions/24614/
The effectiveness of an onion is never to be underestimated for getting rid of bad smells.

No time to read Mary Latham’s item on fizzy drinks but if you want to see why not to drink coke or pepsi just drop a 2p coin in a glass and leave it overnight.
Apols if this was in Mary’s item!!

That was exactly Mary’s point. Now try putting Coke into a kettle, a sink or a WC with limescale and dirt. You will get the same results as you got on your penny 🙂
Put the plug in the sink and empty any water out of the WC first for the very best results.
Any cheap Cola will do, it doesn’t have to be Coke.
I must have very clean internal organs as I live on the stuff LOL
