Universities in Oxford may have to put millions of pounds of developments on hold because protesters claim they have broken planning rules.
Oxford and Oxford Brookes Universities both signed agreements that limit the numbers of students that can live off campus – and residents have put together a census report that argues both have got their numbers wrong.

The great rush for student lettings may be ending for the big corporate developers due to fears of over exposure in the market.
Property consultants EC Harris have revealed public spending cuts have drastically hit the student housing sector as universities do not have the cash to finance building more halls.
Private investors are now finding the banks cannot help – and 22 UK and European lenders have indicated they have no more funds for student developments.

"Development company fined £14,000 for unsafe student accommodation"
Builders who took safety shortcuts in a purpose-built private student hall of residence were ordered to pay more than £14,000 in fines and costs in court.
Cost Design Ltd and UK Real Estate Ltd – part of developers MCR Group – admitted breaching building regulations before Manchester Magistrates Court concerning the development in Grafton Street, Ardwick, Manchester.

A good online experience is better than value-for-money accommodation or a digs in a nice location.
Nine out of 10 opted for broadband as the number one concern in a survey of more than 15,000 students at universities and colleges across the UK. University housing specialist CB Richard Ellis has reported that the capital has seen no publicly funded student accommodation provided in 20 years – and despite billions of pounds of private developments, universities and private halls providers can offer only 54,000 bed spaces. Residents are failing to take a shine to glass and steel tower blocks to house students in university towns and cities.
‘Town v gown’ upsets are setting neighbours against each other in some communities in angry rows over noise, anti-social behaviour and falling housing standards.
With around 3 million students at the UK’s universities and colleges and only supplying on campus bed spaces for around a quarter of the number, private landlords are left to take up the slack.
The UK’s largest private student landlord, Unite Group, only has a capacity for around 42,000 students, leaving a huge number of students sharing houses in local communities.

Looking to furnish a student let?
It’s that time of the year when thoughts turn to student accommodation. Whilst most campuses offer a range of self contained rooms, some parents see this as an opportunity to invest in a house or flat for their children and friends to share and reduce their own child’s living costs.
There are a few basics. Each student will want their own room and a double bed should be standard. Supplying a mattress protector is also a good idea and a yale lock on each bedroom door is also advised.
