A place in the sun
Do any members have advice on buying a property abroad? ![]()
I’m interested in Spain – finding a property to let as a holiday home.
Anticipated returns, management options, dealing with banks/buying process etc.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Rob

I too love Spain, or more correctly the sunshine and laid back lifestyle, but then I am ‘retired’ and don’t have to work. Our b2lets in uk provide a decent return they pay the mortgage on the Spanish property . I would agree with most of your comments. Don’ t buy and hope on getting an income. Taxes, expenses and other unexpected costs will mean you will finish up paying dear for a few weeks when you may use it yourself. As for capital growth – its a myth ! Property is cheap at the moment and it will be years before anyone will see real growth. There are millions of properties for sale along the costa’s. Buy to lets in the uk are the only way. Earn some money with them to pay for a holiday in the sun, unless like us you are retiring.

Hi Mike,
” If you intend to use it as a retirement home than it is fine in so far as buying or not buying ”
My opening sentence covered very much of what you had posted. What I did not get around to posting is that if you wish to retire in the near future than buying as a hedge against any future price rises would come into consideration.
Sadly, Spain has not learn’t that one cannot bite the hands that feed you. I have had a passionate discussions with Spaniards from all walks of live including diplomats.
Their argument is that we have sun and when I remind them that so has Greece, Montenegro, Morocco, Croatia ,Turkey Egypt etc and they much cheaper & their system is much more foreign investment friendly they shrug their shoulders & carry on with their dogmatic approach. .

Hola Ernesto,
While I appreciate your honest postings. YOU however cannot deny that Spaniards takes every one from the North of Europe as a cash machine & they need to be milked at each & every corner.
While they carry on with their incompetent, irresponsible, unaccountable way of life with no sense of fairness or consumer rights. Just read the way the Prior’s had been treated.she put any decent Spaniard to shame.
Any changes that Spain brings is always one step forward & two steps backward.
Until the above mentality changes Spain will still rank as a third worlds Country I can only compare it to Morocco. In at least in Morocco I am not paying first world prices. .
