Housing Charity “Crisis” report that only 1.5% of private landlords will let their properties to housing benefits claimants. This is because the risks are considered to be too great. Make it a criminal offence not to pay rent, especially if Housing Benefits have been claimed for this purpose, and improve the eviction process for none payers and this will attract further investment into the sector, particularly the need for shared accommodation for single under 35’s claiming benefits. Without these changes the housing crisis will get worse as much needed specialist developments for this type of accommodation will not be considered to be viable.

The Government say they need support from the PRS. This needs to be reciprocated if the housing crisis is to be solved.

If 1 million Europeans came to the UK today would there be more or less rogue landlords? I suggest there would be a lot more “beds in sheds” and people would be afraid to complain for fear of losing the roof over their head. Getting the laws right will incentivise investment into development of much needed PRS accommodation, particularly shared housing for single benfits claimants under the age of 35.

Yeah I've done it; but only cos I knew you'd ask if I have, and like G Washington I couldn't tell a lie!!
It's not the best petition wording but at least it is better than nothing.
I'm more concerned about timely eviction.
I don't think attempting to criminalise non-rent payment will achieve the outcome I want, which is to recover my property as SOON as rent has not been paid, if I wish to.
Most LL will not enforce such an eviction if allowed as they will offer a level of forebearance to tenants to enable tenants to come up with the rent monies.
So for practical purposes most LL would leave it until the following rent payment date.
Then if no rent paid then they will evict immediately.
I think a month is more than sufficient for a tenant to resolve rent payment issues.
The LL will hopefully have 2 months rent as deposit to cover for 1 months missed payment with the remainder to pay for damages etc.

I'm up for that. just let me know what my contribution is.

by the way, I owe you an apology.
I've been putting the petition onto lots of groups ( to spread the word ) but it now looks as if I'm the originator of the E-Petition. sorry, I'm not too sure how I did that.

Just read Millibands speach to the Fabian society. Amongst other things he said

"And we will seek to give greater security to families who rent and
remove the barriers that stand in the way of longer term tenancies."

Which probably means "We will make it harder to evict people to do not pay and we will make it harder to put up the rent once you take on a tenant"

So basically if Labour get in we are all stuffed,

Yep that just about sums it up.
But who is going to be concerned if a private LL gets ripped off by his tenant!?
There are 1.5 million private LL.
There are 4.2 million private tenants
Whose vote is worth more!??
This could mean mass LL withdrawal from the HB market and only letting to tenants who qualify for RGI, or the LL will sell up.
Leaving a massive rental property shortfall in the UK.
Then where will all those tenants rent from!?
But I don't suppose thicky Milliband has worked that one out yet!!

Can't add much other than to say it is a shame all
politicians are such Muppets but that Milliband really takes the biscuit. All
they have done is worked out they can win votes by telling people what many
want to believe, that “all landlords are bastards”.

Perhaps they could allow chidren to vote and hand out free ice cream, that would work too.
