Buy to let landlord Abdul Hanif was jailed for allowing a tenant to live in a dangerous and dirty home that lacked hot water and heating.

Hanif was jailed for a day by Reading magistrates when he told the court he could not afford to pay the £665 fine.

The sentence will run alongside a four year sentence he is already serving for drug offences.

The court was told Hanif repeatedly refused to repair dangerous broken electric sockets and fire alarms, the ceilings were holed and a gas supply for cooking and heating was not maintained.

Meanwhile, Swansea Council has chalked up 21 house in multiple occupation prosecution since HMO licensing was started in 2006.

The latest two landlords were fined for failing to licence HMO shared homes in the city.

Dean Ricketts pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates Court to failing to license two properties rented out in the city.

He was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £578 costs.

In a separate case, Abdul Muhith also admitted failing to license another HMO in the city.
He was fined £1,600 and ordered to pay £289 costs.

John Hague, cabinet member of environment in Swansea Council, said: “Swansea Council has now successfully prosecuted 21 cases of landlords failing to license their HMOs since 2006, nine of those being since April 2011.

“We want to ensure that HMOs are of a good standard and well-managed so they provide safe and secure homes for tenants.”

There are around 2,000 HMOs in Swansea. We know that there are lots of good landlords in Swansea who manage their properties well and comply with legal requirements.

“We want to encourage those landlords and assure them and tenants living in HMOs that we will take appropriate legal action, including prosecution, for those who fail to comply with the law.”

I suspect the drug offences might have had something to do with the Jail sentence !

If I read this correctly, then he received no punishment.
The jail term runs concurrently with his current sentence.
