HMO in Birmingham
I am currently researching HMO’s and was hoping somebody in the Birmingham area would show me around their HMO so I can physically see what this looks like in terms of rules and regulations. ![]()
This is something I would like to invest into and build a portfolio one day.
Many thanks
Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie
I am delighted to read that you are doing your research before jumping in with both feet.
To learn more about this market and to meet other landlords I strongly recommend you to complete the Midlands Landlord Accreditation Scheme. It is a one day course that we teach you all the basics and provide you with an opportunity to network with many other landlords in varying levels. Once you have completed the course you will also be entitled to market your properties via the University Accommodation offices.
The courses are run on a “not-for-profit” basis, cost £150 and contain no alluring up-sell courses promising to teach you how to become an overnight billionaire.

I don’t think Mark read your question properly! It covers the legalities of being a landlord and will include HMOs, thought not as the main focus. If you ever set up an HMO that requires a license then you get a discount off the license fee for having MLAS accreditation – can’t remember exactly how much the discount is but I think it more or less covers the cost of the course.
There are also other courses run for accredited landlords, including one specifically on HMOs, and I think that one is only around £15-20. Mary Latham delivers most of these courses so she’s the best person to ask if you want to know more about them.

Hi Lynn
As you may be aware, Mary Latham is a member here. I have tweeted her to unite her to join this discussion.

Anne-Marie, how did your research go? Have you bought your first hmo yet?
