Help – Tenant moved out and no rent payment from Universal Credit?

Hi, I get direct rent payments from Universal Credit for a tenant who has been in the property for 2 years. The tenant moved out yesterday (17th April) and declared a new address as of 18th April.

I’ve just called UC to check that I am still due the last rent payment which would be for 15 March – 14 April. UC state there are no housing costs shown on the statement for this address.

This is clearly wrong as the tenant themselves declared they only left yesterday! (I have proof they left yesterday – Bailiff possession notice) so clearly UC is at fault here.

What do I do next? Anyone been through this?

Thanks,

Reluctant Landlord

I had a similar thing with council tax. The tenant moved out and informed the council BUT the tenant didn't inform me they were moving out so technically (not even technically) they were still a tenant until they gave the correct notice. They never did. I argued with the council that I should not be liable for the council tax for at least another month .. and to my utter surprise they conceded, by which time I had found another tenant.

It’s no wonder that people don’t want UC tenants… but you’re not even allowed to say that now.

I learned it the hard way, just the once and that was enough for me. Serial scamming tenant lived at my place for nearly 3 months and never paid a penny, UC wouldn't talk to me because T had told them he had already moved out when he hadn't and finally he skipped off taking my new TV with him (it was an HMO).
Police not interested in the TV because I didn't see him walking off with it, even though only him and me had a key to that room.
If I sound bitter it's because I am but I did learn from my expensive lesson.
