A new consultation has been launched for landlords and industry professionals to give their thoughts on how to make energy-efficiency improvements to properties.

RICS has launched a consultation which will be aimed at helping surveyors provide useful retrofitting advice.

The organisation believes part of the reason why consumers aren’t retrofitting their homes is that they don’t know where to get advice.

25 million homes in the UK will require energy improvement works

Results from its recent survey found that 36% of homeowners would not know how to go about making their homes more environmentally friendly, while 78% would find it helpful if their surveyor could offer retrofitting advice when buying a property.

An estimated 25 million homes in the UK will require some form of energy improvement work, according to RICS.

RICS says that independent professional advice will be critical in achieving energy improvements.

UK homes are not as energy efficient as they could or should be

Antony Parkinson, RICS Senior Property Specialist, said: “UK homes are not as energy efficient as they could or should be. This needs to change and we have to act now.

“Improving energy efficiency needs to be incorporated into the ongoing maintenance of our homes. Efficient homes use less energy which will save money and help save the planet.

He added: “We are developing the new RICS retrofit standard at pace so that RICS members can help customers improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

“We all have a role to play and by working together we can make a difference.”

The eight-week consultation – at https://consultations.rics.org/retrofitstandard/ – runs until 12th September

My recent house survey recommended improvements [most of which will be done through refurb... except heat source pump], but as usual, was riddled with caveats to cover the surveyor's backside.

What we need right now is a reliable and consistent EPC process!
