    Think the Tories are the party of homeownership? Consider research assembled by Labour: there are almost 250,000 fewer English and Welsh homeowners since David Cameron became prime minister. Even more staggeringly, the number of homeowners aged under 34 has plummeted by 50%.

    Home ownership is now at its lowest level for nearly three decades. Government schemes such as “Help-to-Buy” (never say the Tories aren’t clever at branding bad policies) have succeeded in pushing up house prices, perversely making home ownership even more of a fantastical dream for millions. And the legacy of right to buy – other than an epic social housing crisis – means that nearly four out of every 10 of the homes sold off under the scheme are now being rented out by private landlords.

    Hi Kathy. Yes that’s a good name for us – Home Providers.

    I too have had tenants for that length of time, and they’ve never had any rent rise and if they ever need any help they get straight on to me. Alas I will be saying goodbye to some of them due to the tax change.

    It’s not their fault, it’s not mine. We know who’s responsible but he has deaf ears.

    @Jamie,

    Will you be asking him to vote against this particular measure when it comes to the vote later this month, or will he be in the camp of the “good men that do nothing”?

    Just receive the answer to FoI request posted on 5th Sept:

    Q. “When HMRC produced its impact report on the proposal to restrict finance cost relief for individual landlords, how many private landlords did HMRC assume are currently in the UK and how many properties did HMRC assume are currently owned by these landlords?”

    A. When producing the impact report on the proposal to restrict finance cost relief for individual landlords HMRC assumed there were 2.1 million individual landlords in the UK who declared that they rent out 3.7 million properties in total.
    In order to answer your request I am interpreting private landlords as all individual landlords who complete the property pages of the main Self-Assessment tax return (SA105). The number of properties that they currently own is taken to be the total number of properties rented out, as declared on the SA105. The figures provided relate to tax year 2012-13.
    These figures do not include information captured on the short Self-Assessment tax return (SA200). No information about the number of properties rented out by individuals completing the SA200 is available.
    These figures will not include a small number of individuals who have rental income but pay through their PAYE code, and who do not have to submit a return. These figures also exclude individuals who rent out rooms and receive income below the threshold for the Rent a Room tax relief, which is £4,250 per year. Individuals receiving rental income through companies are also excluded from these figures.

    If it were a Labour Govt. I think the press would be crucifying them. Unfortunately, with a weak opposition there is no one to hold them to account, much like back in the 80’s I’m sorry to say ;(

    RLA Chairman Alan Ward has written to the Chief Executive of homelessness charity ‘Shelter’ asking for clarity on statistics released to the media that recently claimed tenants across the country are suffering at the hands of rogue landlords. The RLA condemns any landlord who engages in harassment, threats, or assault of tenants, but finds the reported numbers hard to believe.

    Yes, Kathy. I asked the RLA to do this a few weeks ago and then they did. And Shelter have had plenty of time to answer, but there’s been no news from the RLA so far on this. It would be good if someone could try and find out if they have had any kind of a reply from Shelter.
