Separate front door security key

My landlord wants to charge double for a new copy of security key. I know where this key is cut as it has been the same for 25 years.
I used to be able to get a letter from landlord allowing me to go straight to key cutter and pay only £10.50. Now they won’t give me a letter of authorisation and want £20.
Is this legal?

Hi Christine,
It is not criminal in the legal sense, but after 25 year of tenancy it is very Harsh assuming it is not a frequent occurrence.

Christine, ask the landlord why the change has happened.
There could be many reasons for his/her action and without understanding them your unjust feeling will remain. It maybe that simply she/he was having a bad day and your asking in a polite and reasonable way will make him/her appreciate what happened and they’ll give you a revised way forward.
When he/she has given their response, if you need to because they seem unchanged, look for a solution that would be acceptable to both of you.
There are better things to do with life than getting frustrated and ruining a good relationship over £9.50. There’s always a middle ground if you both go looking for one.
