Landlords in Mansfield will need a selective licence for each of their properties from 13 September, costing £800.
Following a public consultation last year, Mansfield District Council has greenlit its selective licensing proposals.
The council says it wants to work with landlords to improve the area and will use enforcement powers to do so.
Mansfield’s selective licensing scheme will affect 1,200 properties and run until 10 September 2030.
Councillor Anne Callaghan, the council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “We know that many of our residents in Mansfield often find that renting privately is their only option due to a lack of social housing versus demand, and most landlords provide good quality, safe accommodation.
“But there are some who take advantage of their tenants, leaving too many people living in poor conditions or having to deal with antisocial behaviour or neighbourhood crime.”
She added: “This scheme will help us tackle these problems head-on – as well as crack down on rogue landlords, making sure that all privately rented properties meet the standards we demand.”
Under the new scheme, landlords must obtain licences for every private rental property they own.
The scheme covers Central ward, Bancroft, West Bank and Wainwright wards.
It will also affect landlords with properties in Market Warsop ward, plus Eakring and Rock Hill wards.
Starting 12 June, landlords can submit licence applications through the council’s online portal.
They’ll have a three-month period to get their paperwork in order.
A licence costs £800, divided into a £500 application charge and a £300 issuance fee.
Landlords who act swiftly and apply before 12 September will get a £50 reduction.
Those enrolled in a recognised accreditation scheme can shave off an additional £100, bringing the cost down to £650.
Every day, landlords who want to influence policy and share real-world experience add their voice here. Your perspective helps keep the debate balanced.
