Gas shortage supplies this winter?

Hello, just watched a video by Nigel Farage who was talking about Europe filling up its gas tanks with LPG from Russia. A big point was we haven’t in the U.K. filled those tanks.

So it got me thinking. What if we have a cold winter and we get gas rationing?

In my house we have a wood burner so will be ok. However, all my houses are gas heated. It is possible that the tenants might have to buy some electric form of heating.

So my question to everyone: Is this my responsibility? I think it is just one of those events which you cannot be held responsible for. I might instead mention it to tenants and warn them about a potential gas issue so it will be their responsibility to plan.

Thanks,

John

It is not possible to 'ration gas' or even reduce supply pressure.
The consequence of stopping supply to any property would mean that when the supply is reinstated, gas appliances could vent natural gas to the atmosphere - this would cause fires and explosions.
Reducing supply pressure (below 21mb +/- 2mb) would mean that appliances would burn poorly producing Carbon monoxide.
The only way to reduce gas usage would be to cut electricity which would then mean that boilers will not work

My understanding is we have very little capacity for storage in this country (unlike, say, Germany), which I can quite believe as we’re seemingly utterly useless at virtually everything now.

This article is nonsense. There is no gas shortage as European gas storage is almost full, nearly 2 months ahead of schedule - I suggest John speaks to an energy market expert rather than listen to an ill informed politician. Yes mainland Europe has more long term storage than UK, which focuses on short term storage, but access to the gas in storage is open to the European market depending on price not which country you are in - It is a European, not EU, market for gas. Also, telling tenants to use electricity instead of gas is equally nonsense - if there really was a gas shortage then we wouldn't be able to generate the electricity either, particularity in the winter.

Many years of ‘just-in-time’ purchasing gave governments the excuse they needed to get rid of expensive storage facilities. Absolutely zero planning for a war in Europe.

It’s the same in the Ministry of Defence where we are heavily reliant on foreign suppliers. We’d be in trouble if the supplier nations didn’t support our use of their equipment.

This is incorrect. The Rough (longer term) storage facility was declared unsafe and has since been reopened with smaller capacity. The focus on shorter term capacity was mainly because of the move to more renewable electricity, which is more unpredictable than gas or coal generation (now almost all gone in UK), and so the ability to access gas in storage for power generation quickly became more important in order to avoid the risk of black outs. In any case these storage facilities are privately owned not government owned
