Also insurance companies and insurance brokers… we normally have them fighting over our business for the portfolio insurance.
The ripple effect of our big financial ‘footprint’ as portfolio landlords has a huge reach when you start to think about it – B&Q, Homebase and other stores benefit from our custom of course; thinking about our ‘general expenses’ too – there’s petrol, stationery, hotel bills, postage, etc… As our business shrinks, all these economic activities and exchanges will shrink with us.
Our plumber and kitchen fitter are especially worried; as is the local council, who will have to deal with the fall-out of evicted tenants with nowhere to go.
Brilliant work by all on here, so many great minds thinking alike…
Ladies, Ros, Connie, Kathy, Lisa and others you’re amazing:-)

Has anybody thought of any alternative proposal? Given that are going to get a tax increase regardless, why not have something that is sensible, fair, and applicale to all Landlords.
Eg a flat 25% tax on residential property rental profit? This would apply to corporates, properties without mortgages and spread the burden across all residential landlords.

Wow this list just grew and I’m sure it could get longer. What I don’t want to do is make my MP meeting all about the landlord and tenant situation as most will have heard those arguments already and have closed up on the subject.
Indirectly affected suppliers and services supported by the private rental sector.
– Gas engineers & electricians.
– Maintenance & Repair companies.
– Gardening services.
– Small builders.
– Kitchen / bathroom fitters.
– Carpet fitters and suppliers.
– Blinds / window treatment fitters.
– Painters and decorators.
– Locksmiths / Alarm technicians.
– Builders merchants. (Not just the small ones)
– Electricians.
– Mortgage brokers.
– Inventory clerks.
– Letting / Estate agents.
– Conveyance services & solicitors.
– Insurance providers.
– Accountancy services.
– Local authorities having to house dislodged tenants.
– Cleaning services.
– Furniture suppliers.
Perhaps there are more than just landlords and tenants who need to rally together.

Hi Mark
I have just been working my way through this thread and noted that TDS re-tweeted the link to the petition some time ago. I’m wondering if anyone here can see if they will also email their database with links to the petition, saynotogeorge, the Richard Dyson article and so on? Any takers?

Barry Fitzpatrick – I think a fair solution to landlords is that the rent a room scheme amount to be applicable to each property that is rented. Or going forward, on NEW purchases, a Land Tax Levy is payable for all those who have decided to continue in the BTL game, so therefore no FTBs are affected by the supposed actions of LLs.

I was just on the ‘phone to the Scottish Association of Landlords and they weren’t aware of the Richard Dyson article, so I’ve sent them the link and asked them to circulate it. It sounded like they also didn’t know about the ‘saynotogeorge’ website so I gave them that as well. I can see from an email they sent to me that they did know about the petition.

AL
I am not sure the rent a room scheme is a direct comparable to letting a whole house , although is not too dissimilar to an HMO.
But it is an idea. Which is what the purpose of this post is about is to air some alternative proposals to GO’s proposal. I think there is going to be some pain as GO wants to raise more taxes from the PRS. So I feel it is better that everyone in the PRS suffers a little pain rather than a few suffering massive pain.

Anyone fancy emailing this guy?
Martin Silman
Portsmouth & District Private Landlords Association

And giving him the link to the Richard Dyson article. He’s the one who wrote that silly piece (I’m spotting these things as I trawl through the comments!)
