Ros, they are also suggesting a blanket approach without looking at the particular needs of particular areas. There are houses standing empty and waiting for buyers, so there is not a shortage in some areas. There are areas that are so fun down that house prices are very reasonable (15k – 50k), yet no first time buyers are going for those properties. Without investors, those houses would remain empty. At least an investor / landlord would improve the property and make the house into a potential home for someone or a family. they must look at need, which have been addressed by private landlords for years.

Bravo! Estate agents have attempted to drive up sale prices with all these ‘open house’ events in places like Portsmouth, where there is a shortage of houses and these go straight away either to homeowners or buy to let. I went to some ‘open house’ events, didn’t like the tactics, and refused to attend any more. The flats I have bought instead have never had much interest. Their purchases allowed either the tenant to stay put as I could take them on, or for the owner to move out of the area, into a big house with a growing family. I think estate agents are happy with us when it suits them. We take on properties that are sometimes not as desirable or suitable.
Estate agents should be behind us for providing them with their commissions; one survey stated that owner occupiers were more likely to stay on average eight years or more rather than in previous decades when they moved up the property ladder after three or four. Buy to let has stimulated the recent economic recovery, and allowed for mobility within the workforce with a supply of flexible accommodation and I am so sick of just being blamed for the ills of society and governments who let housing stock dwindle over the last twenty years or so and now needing a scapegoat for their incompetence.
And Shakeel, I know what you mean! If there were an Olympic sport for ‘fudging it’, the UK government would win gold!

John, what a thoughtful post. Our campaign must not be up for any negotiation.
This is similar to debt collector turns up at your door-step demanding £100k with the threats of taking you to court, when NO debt is owed!
You can’t plead to debt collector although I do not owe any debt, but can we renogotiate to £50k.
Shakeel, please define your thoughts.

Having a Ltd company does not give any cast iron guarantees that, Chancellor is going to exempt them or will shelter them from tax nasties forever….they way Osborne is going he may have something nastier up his sleeves to fleece LTD companies. If you remember, the old saying “One thing at a time”

@gentle landlord.: If you could narrow it down for me I will be delighted to share my thoughts.
For starters.
I am all in favour of mounting a legal challenge. ( As have always done against crooked Freeholders & Managing Agents ) at the same time I am well aware of the apathy & defeatist attitude people have. Just lie down & surrender.
Osborne, may be feeling that he can act in this manner as the party can spin it by stating that they have just won the election with a majority.
I hope this enlightens to. However if you want more please feel free to give me some parameters.
I have never called myself a landlord. As this word in my opinion carries a stigma and I am no one for political correctness.

Darren Bell – Mark Lancaster MP was in the MK Citizen not long after this budget proposal stating that he’s going to listen to the homeless people’s individual stories who currently live in tents behind the Station as the Council have now served notice on them! I would add that when we had an anti social issue a few years ago, he did make an action plan and follow it up with the relevant authorities at the highest level, so I think at least he tries to make a difference. Ros I have sent off a letter to this Milton Keynes MP if you are still keeping a list (amongst your many other extraordinary efforts)!

Just rec
Dear Mrs Miller
Thank you for your email about the proposed changes to the tax regime.
We note that the NLA and other representative bodies have been running stories about this proposal too.
I have circulated the email to the Private Sector Housing manager, the Allocations and Options managers and the New Homes manager. We cannot take a position as officers of the council but we are concerned about changes which would reduce the numbers of private rented properties available to let or increase costs (and thus prices) in the sector. We appreciate that many landlords in Wiltshire could be significantly affected by these proposals.
The petition has over 10,000 signatures now so we await the government’s formal response.
We occasionally hold a Landlords’ Forum of which you are probably a member. If not, please let me know if you would like to be added to the circulation list.
Best regards, John
John Walker

What about a letter to lenders to ask their support in lobbying. Some of the lenders exposed to buy to let must have concerns about their balance sheets. If the treasury is going to listen to anyone it’s the banks. Letters to chief financial officers?
Also, could we convince ARLA and the DPS etc to support the campaign?

I wondered if some lenders who have many mortgages on the real low var rates see it as a way to get rid of them. They have been very quite on this.
