Landlords Alliance donates to defend our property rights

Unless you’ve been living under a stone, you will have seen the Government waging a relentless war against private landlords. Some of the effects of this are now being seen in the courts, where extremely poor legislation, full of ‘unintended consequences’ is beginning to hit landlords hard.  This is in the context of landlords already more often than not being the losers – with the ‘system’ often granting rogue tenants lengthy rent-free periods in our properties.

Shockingly, however, we now face cases where rogue tenants are being granted indefinite leave to remain in our properties, even when they are not paying the rent. The Residential Landlords Association is crowdfunding to support a landlord in such a case at the moment.

If the scrapping of Section 21 proceeds according to plan, cases such as the one mentioned will become common. This is because, according to what has been mooted, it is likely that conditions currently attached to Section 21 (whose non-compliance invalidates the Section) will be ported over to Section 8, which has been a kind of safety net for many. This will mean that if an error has been made at any point, the ‘new’ Section 8 will be invalid and it may prove impossible to ever evict a non-paying and even abusive tenant, as there will be no legal recourse to do so.

I have raised this point with the MHCLG; they refuse to give any reassurance that absurd and outrageous scenarios such as these will not become commonplace as a result of the legislation.

In the face of such farcical, anti-private property policies, we must fight back.

The Landlords Alliance has just made a donation of £500 to the fund and I urge people to both donate to the crowdfund and to also join the Alliance as this is exactly the kind of cause the Alliance was set up to fight for.

Any one of us may be next in the firing line; any one of us can fall victim to a rogue tenant and be faced with this outrageous situation of not being able to get our property back.  I urge everyone reading this to show that we can and will stand together and help our fellow landlords get justice.

The Humber Landlords Association (South Bank) have just agreed to pledge the difference between the current total and the target.

That's fantastic, Luke. Thank everyone from me - it was only on £800 something yesterday or the day before when I found out about it, so with the Alliance pledge and yours, that gets them over the line. I will ask the RLA to keep us informed about progress.

At a time when Tenant groups are increasing and ramping up their pressure on Government ( despite them pushing at an 'Open door' ) there has never been a more apt time where landlords must shake off their apathy.
PossessionFriend.uk has donated to this fund and call upon all Landlords to take action.

Hi Chris.
Yes, an excellent donation by PossessionFriendUK. I noticed a few other donations coming in from our friends here at 118. I have also been in contact with Alan Ward at the RLA and he has said they will keep us in the loop regarding progress with the case.

I pressed the 'donate to the crowdfunder icon' but this came up 'Thank you for your generous pledge' but I didn't pledge anything! But I would like to. Help me here, please?

Thanks for letting us know. I will pass this on to the RLA as it may be a problem for others as well.

It’s the link in the above article that’s wrong…it’s the one that shows up *after* a donation’s been made.

Here’s the correct link: https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/welsh-section-8-repossession/

Thanks, Luke. Maybe Neil can change the link in the above article to your one? It seems a bit strange that the total donated has stayed on 2005 for about two days now... It will be very annoying if people have tried and can't pledge.

And changed in the article now thanks.

Hi Neil
Just to clarify - I reread what I wrote and it was confusing. I meant that if something on the crowdfund page was preventing people from donating that would be annoying. I wasn't talking about the link here - because this is not the only route to the fundraising page of course. It strikes me that there must have been or maybe still is something wrong with that page itself as one would have expected more than £5 to have been pledged in two days or so. I don't know how well it has been publicised though apart from here. I only chanced upon it on twitter I think.
