Hmm..the co-presenter has made me realise that all the country's woes regarding social housing are not down to Thatcher. The demand for social housing remains unchanged even after social houses are sold off. It's simple. There are 10 people in social housing and 12 people looking for social housing. The 10 people already in social housing sell their houses. There are STILL 12 people looking for social housing. Therefore the issue is really that's there's a growing demand for social housing that isn't being met. So the 12 people looking for social housing become 15 people and the issue gets worse.
I still detest Thatcher.

I’ve never understood the “right” to buy. The council sell off an asset at a huge discount (so the tax payer funded it). There’s now a house out of circulation because it’s gone. There’s still growing demand for social housing. And I don’t know what happens… but a lot of houses in auctions and for sale are ex local authority … so eventually do these tenants who bought sell up (at a big profit) and move to a better house? And the original house is back in circulation to rent… but via an investor this time, and not the council?? So one person has been enriched by the right to buy. Everyone else pays the price!! It should be stopped. If you’re going to buy, the council should get enough money to buy something similar and replace what has just been sold!!

I don't agree with right to buy, but RTB has not deprived anyone of a house. Unless the property price was reduce then it is likely the tenants would not have been able to afford to buy, and hence would still be renting.

It's true that right to buy doesn't reduce the available quantity of housing. The problem with it is that the tax payer provides a subsidy of up to 30% of a house and up to 50% of a flat. It's an enormous, life-changing giveaway. A massive after-tax benefit that is the best deal in town in the housing market and the money doesn't go back into new housing stock.

And as can be seen from London properties, I wonder how many have used the property as their pension, sold up and moved out of London
