It might go against the mainstream media narrative, but a survey has found that 66% of renters enjoy a constructive and amicable relationship with their landlord.
The findings from Aldermore highlight robust communication channels, with 77% of tenants reporting effective dialogue with their landlords.
Only 13% described their relationship as unfavourable, while the remainder viewed it as neutral.
The lender’s latest Buy to Let Index, which surveyed 500 landlords and 2,000 tenants, also reveals that 35% of tenants have been permitted to personalise their homes with cosmetic changes.
And 34% of tenants have been allowed to keep pets.
Aldermore’s director of mortgages, Jon Cooper, said: “Being a good landlord isn’t just about collecting rent.
“It’s about creating a safe and well-maintained property, coupled with open communication that creates a professional and respectful relationship with a tenant.”
He added: “Despite some negative reports of the tenant/landlord relationship, our data shows that the majority have positive experiences, with many landlords making a proactive effort to improve the living situation of renters.”
Accessibility is a key factor, with 63% of renters noting that their landlord is readily available to address concerns.
Additionally, 89% of landlords prioritise diligent maintenance, ensuring their properties remain in excellent condition through routine inspections and timely repairs.
Landlords also exceed expectations by offering unsolicited assistance.
More than a third (35%) of tenants with positive experiences reported that their landlords provided proactive support, such as addressing non-urgent property needs.
Also, 18% of renters appreciated thoughtful enhancements, like aesthetic upgrades to their homes.
Every day, landlords who want to influence policy and share real-world experience add their voice here. Your perspective helps keep the debate balanced.

My tenants are great and that is why I am not issuing Section 21 Notices.
Instead, I’ll ride the storm and keep my fingers crossed.
However, I will NEVER issue a new tenancy. As tenants leave, I’ll sell to local first time buyers.
